When pulling powermate backwards the power is intermittently goes on and off. Problem doesn't occur when pushing powermate forward... only when pulling back.

Rather than pay $10 for a new cover terminal (which I probably couldn't install myself anyway), $99 for a whole new wand, and possibly $108 for a whole new hose (ridiculous prices, btw), I took a small flat head screwdriver and scraped off the dirt/corrosion on the terminal pins. This didn't resolve my problem, but I noticed the connection between the extension wand and the "Power mate" hose handle was loose. The handle could wiggle/slide about 1/8" when connected to the wand, creating the loose connection. I used the screwdriver to bend the pins down slightly (in the direction away from the wand tube), to compensate for the loose connection. This worked like a charm, fixed the intermittent circuit contact completely, and was very easy to do. I'd highly recommend trying this, before doing anything more complicated.

i've been havin' the same intermittent power issue with the Powermate attachment on my Sears Kenmore canister vacuum cleaner. I used your suggestion to bend the pins away from the tube and it worked! Thanks! josh360guy 11/1/11
I too had the burned out pin and pin receptacle. Is this a common problem with Model 116? Anyway, in order to avoid paying more than necessary, I followed Pseudothink's suggestion and it worked. I'm thinking it's just a temporary fix, but for the moment I'm good with it. Thanks for your help!
Great suggestion and solution! I originally thought I might have to replace the extension wand or rotating brush (base) unit because I thought it was a short somewhere. I had started suspecting the connection mentioned by Pseudothink, but wasn't sure. My Kenmore Progressive canister sweeper is about five years old (orange model - 116.25812508). It started noticing this problem in the last few months. Glad that such an easy thing solved the problem. In process, I also noticed a suction control dial (at that connection) that can change the intensity of the vacuum pull itself. My dial was set to the lowest pull (open), so I changed it to get greater suction. Glad to both fix the intermittent power issue and discover the suction control dial. Your vac has the extension wand. where the wand meets the handle is where you need to check. at the top of the wand is two pins. that is a part that is call a fuse or cover terminal. you need to have that change. also check the bottom of the wand,see if there is any discoloration. there is more but if this is too much for you now, then take it to the Sears repair center.

I've had this problem time and again. In some cases the connectors in the hose or the wand were burned and I replaced then to correct the problem. The issue is that the dimensions of the male pins and female sockets in the connectors aren't as close as they need to be to create a tight connection. The connector at he base of the wand that attaches to the powermate head was the source of may latest frustration. After replacing the connectors, I had to shim the connecter on the powermate to force the contact pins away from the wand. It is similar to solution 2 posted above, but doesn't require bending the pins.
I was able to just tin the male portion of that connector using solder paste flux and some solder. Works like a charm.

Same here...........I must admit I'm a neat freak and used this red kenmore progressive for 2 solid years 5 days a week. It took that long to start with the wand skipping with power. I couldn't tell if it was from the handle to wand or wand to powerhead connection.....either way,,, I would probably be set......But if I do get this part......How the heck do I replace it? The motors in the vacuum and powerhead work fine...........If this is a known problem, I wish Sears would do something about it...........The only reason I have went through three of them is that they are the most user friendly vacuum I've ever used and are very effective when working....... I had the same problem and it was getting worse for a few weeks. Then I started to smell a chemical/burning smell when I vacuumed. Then the powermate head just stopped working and I discovered that the cord on the neck of the powerhead was frayed through, it seems due the design of the cover holding it in place. I checked the parts website but you can't buy the whole powerhead. So, I now have a very expensive vacuum sculpture.

Yes, I've had the same problem with 3 of my Kenmore Progressives. 2 white models and one blue.
same thing happens. I think it's the plastic connector piece to the powerhead. If I could replace that, I'd be set, but my vacuum is over 5 years old.
I am having similar problem with Kenmore canister vacuum flickering on and off. It's has gotten worse after a couple of weeks. Once in awhile, it completely shut off entirely. I checked the connection between the wand and the handle and it seems fine. Where else can I look?
the power mate power connector it doesnt stay securely in place causing it to not get power from the handle.

I have a similar problem. My vacuum will shut off and/or switch power settings (carpet to low or high and vise versa). I have even turned the vacuum back ON by pushing the OFF button.
Same issue, but different model (orange one). Anyway it just keeps getting worse, I have taken everything apart, cleaned and put back together to no avail. Everthing looks fine. How do you take the "fuse" piece apart, I could not see a solution without breaking it?
