How to improve print quality Cleaning the print head
To ensure good print quality, the MFC will regularly clean the print head. You can start the cleaning process manually if needed. Clean the print head and ink cartridges if you get a horizontal line in the text or graphics on your printed pages. You can clean Black only or three colors at a time (Cyan/Yellow/Magenta), or all four colors at once.
Cleaning the print head consumes ink. Cleaning too often uses ink unnecessarily.
Caution
Do NOT touch the print head. Touching the print head may cause permanent damage and may void the print head’s warranty.
1 Press Ink.
2 Press or to select Cleaning.
Press Menu/Set.
3 Press or to select Black, Color or All.
Press Menu/Set.
The MFC will clean the print head. When cleaning is finished, the MFC will go back to standby mode automatically. If you clean the print head at least five times and the print has not improved, call Brother Customer Service (see Brother numbers on page i).
Checking the print quality
If faded or streaked colors and text appears on your output, some of the nozzles may be clogged. You can check this by printing the Print Quality Check Sheet and looking at the nozzle check pattern.
1 Press Ink.
2 Press or to select Test Print.
Press Menu/Set.
3 Press or to select Print Quality.
Press Menu/Set.
4 Press Color Start.
The MFC begins printing the Print Quality Check Sheet.
5 Check the sheet to see if the quality is OK by following these steps:
Color block quality check
The LCD shows:
6 Check the quality of the four color blocks on the sheet.
7 If all lines are clear and visible, press 1 (Yes), and go to Step 10.
OR
If you can see missing short lines as shown below, press 2 (No).
The LCD will ask you if the print quality is OK for black and three colors.
OK Poor
Is Quality OK?
1.Yes 2.No
Black OK?
1.Yes 2.N
8 Press 2 (No) for Black or three colors
with a problem.
The LCD shows:
Press 1 (Yes). The MFC will start cleaning the print head.
9 After cleaning is finished, press Color Start. The MFC will start
printing the Print Quality Check Sheet again and then return to
step 5.
10 Press Stop/Exit.
There is more, but too long to put here.

Printer still keeps saying check ink

Did that start with new ink or with part-used cartridges?

Either way will the printer let you clean its heads and if it will, what happens if you clean them at least four times in a row without doing anything else in between, please? (that includes no test prints, no shutting down and restarting - nothing but cleaning at least four times in a row)

Otherwise are you using the maker's own ink and either way, how long ago did it last print successfully?

Drum Life Ends soon - Brother

The problem with this is the design. Each toner cartridge has a microchip on it, that counts the pages you print. The company has determined that you get x amounts of prints. Then you have to replace it, empty or not. This printers do not work the same way as an expensive professional business copier. In an pro style there is a spent toner cartridge that collects all of the wasted toner that is on the drum. On a small business/home style this spent toner goes back into the cartridge. There is no level indicator, even on the inkjet printer. They too, have a chip that says you have x amount of prints/cleaning cycles they can go through. Look up inkjet refill kits or inkjet cartridge programmer.

Printer keeps skipping lines when printing. very annoying

is this a case of the dots are missing for a valid line, or do you mean a line feed is added at the end of a line, ie you get 3 lines of text occupying 4 lines of space , or 4 lines of text occupies 4 lines of space, but one line has no printed dots on it? to make it more obvious, what does a document with say text thats 3cm tall look like? as it sounds to me like contacts need cleaning.. *** note for info: do not rely on printouts from within a BROWSER as that may have unpredictable results. All text will be treated as a large block of PIXELS and Not TEXT. also Non Printer fonts could cause similar issues.

Printer won't print-says color cartridge is missing and it is there

With your lexmark, the printhead is separate to the cartridge, so you can try cleaning the printhead on the printer with correct pc cleaning fluid and a cotton bud (Q tip is us) see if this helps. It will not hurt to use a wet wipe (baby wipe, not perfumed) and gently clean the gold contacts (points) on the cartridge where it goes into the printer. Post back if no good. For the hp, i believe hp's have the printhead atattched to the cartridge itself (i do not have as much info about hp's) and as you have tried cleaning already (assuming you cleaned as above) you coukd try uninstalling and reinstalling printer. Post back if you nees assistance in this.
