You cannot reset the ink levels for the HP 901 cartridges - ink monitoring is used for planning purposes only and does not interfere with regular printing ops. Just ignore (dismiss/OK/continue) any warning or alert messages that get displayed. Here are some helpful videos specific to the OJ J4580 (and J6400 printer series), including fatal cartridge error bypass procedures:

Reset ink cartridge

Unfortunately you can't....

The ink level indicator cannot be manually re-set in the newer HP, Lexmark or Dell integrated ink cartridges, thus making it not usable. The OEMs all leverage 'fusible links' in the nozzle plate (internal to base of ink cartridge) which physically blows the resistors as the original ink is consumed...thus resetting the ink cartridge's ink level monitoring capability is simply not possible. The ink tracking feature is only available with a brand new ink cartridge.

However, losing this feature is not necessarily significant, because the ink level indicator usually has 20%-30% ink remaining when it shows "low on ink". Therefore, the warning has limited value, because customers who prematurely replace their cartridges when they see the "low ink" message are wasting a lot of residual ink.

Refer to any of the following videos which cover this 'low ink' subject in detail:
http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=396 (HP 60/61 Low Ink)

How do i find ink levels in Windows 8 for HP Office Jet J4580

It depends on what type of ink cartridge you have installed.....with HP genuine ink cartridges and HP Solution center installed, everything should be there. However, if you get an HP integrated ink cartridge refilled (i.e. HP 60, 61, 74, 75, 901, 92-98....currently offered at Costco or Frys today) or if you buy a remanufactured/compatible HP ink cartridge, the ink levels will not be displayed nor can they be reset (HP has a smart chip embedded within the nozzle plate at base of ink cartridge which counts the drops and then registers as empty).....so you'll just need to live with it and ignore 'ink low', 'non-genuine', 'counterfeit' messages and similar while you are using these types of aftermarket supplies. The first video below provides an overview of the 'low ink' phenomena.

NOTE: These types of 'SEVERE' cartridge errors (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem" etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #901 / 901XL cartridge are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); you may also bypass the error (temporarily) on all models which use HP 901 cartridges. How to reset hp 901 ink

Refer to Inkjet411.com sitelet for all printer models which use refilled ink cartridges (most major brands and models) - see videos below on HP 901 and 901XL low ink warning messages, along with all the other more severe error messages:

How to reset ink level for the j4580 printer cartridges , i have printer like this ,and i refill the cartridges, but i don't know how to reset the ink level.

Try this, it works for many models, I hope it will work for yours too:
  1. Make sure that the product is turned on and connected to the computer.
  2. Click Start and click Control Panel .
  3. Double-click the Printer and Faxes folder.
  4. Right-click the icon for the product and click Preferences .
  5. Click the Services tab, and then click Service this Device .
  6. The printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A graphic showing the estimated ink levels appears. The graphic shows both the color and black ink cartridge with the ink level indicated by the fill inside the cartridge diagram.

My refilled ink cartridge still displays empty and will not print

The ink cartridge is most likely chipped & you would not be able to reset the ink level. Purchase an original or a good compatible cartridge. Refiling newer cartridges is not a good idea.

My hp officejet j4580 says incompatible black ink cartridge

I've been in print cartridge hell since I bought a J4580.

I spent an hour on chat with HP customer service and was able to resolve the problem by partially resetting the printer. Here's how:
  • Make sure your print cartridges are installed.
  • Unplug the machine, wait 20 seconds
  • Press and hold the # and 3 keys
  • Plug the machine back in
  • You'll see a reset message on the machine, release the # and 3 keys
  • Follow the prompts to set the language and location
Cross your fingers, hopefully your printer will print now!

How to reset the ink level for a HP 60 ink cartridge? I have just refilled a HP 60 black ink cartridge but can not find anything on how to reset the ink level. I would do the "3 ink cartridge" trick but I...

You cannot reset the ink level indicator for the HP 60 ink cartridge. It shouldn't matter anyway because the level is only estimated for "management purposes only" (see user manual) meaning to let you know when it's near time to order a new cartidge. I have tried cycling through 3 different cartridges to reset the ink level for the one I refilled but it didn't work. Refill and just ignore the ink level indicator. Also, it's a good idea to clean the print heads with the solvent in the refill kit before refilling to remove old ink and imrpove print quality.

My printer can't read the new ink level after refilling

The ink level indicator is only an estimate to give you an idea when it's time to buy a new cartridge. You cannot reset the ink level indicator so simply ignore it if you refill your cartridges. See pg 72 of the user manual which you can get here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01374711.pdf
