You may be able to get an external antenna for it; check where the existing antenna connects to see if it can be removed. If not, raising the elevation of the access point will help. Also, be sure to place the access point away from thick walls or metal.

If nothing else works for you, just take an aluminum can, cut off the top and bottom, flare out the sides of the can into a parabolic reflector and place to close to your antenna behind where your laptop is located. It will be directional and you'll have to have someone watch the signal strength meter of the device (laptop?) to see how much of a change is being made (if any). Do bear in mind that any increase in range in one direction means a decrease of range in other directions. Good luck and good experimenting!

My hcl laptop with winxp shows very weak wireless signal strength at just 2 metre from the modem though other devices show complete signal strength. the device manager shows no problems with the hardware....

You can try this solution
  1. Right-click on the 'My Computer' icon on your computer and choose 'Properties'.
  2. Click on the 'Hardware' tab and then click on the 'Device Manager'.
  3. Now, find the 'Network Adapters' section and click on the little plus-sign to the left.
  4. Find your wireless network adapter and right-click on it and choose 'Properties'.
  5. This is where things will get different depending on the brand of your laptop and wireless card and which drivers you have installed. Browse through the different tabs and look for settings such as 'Power Management' or 'Transmit Power'. Adjust the settings to either disable the power management or increase the amount of power used by the network card.
  6. Now, test your wireless signal strength to see if you still have the same weak wireless signal you had before. The chances are that you will notice an increased wireless signal strength.

My icon says I only have 80% signal strength, is

80% is a good signal strength....but if you want to increase the signal strength, then you need to move the wireless router to a very ventilated area, also the router should be placed atleast 5 feet away from other electronic devices like, modem, ups, microwave ovens, refrigerators etc.... also there should be a line of sight between the router and the wi-fi adapter... but in order to connect to a wireless network 25% of signal strength is enough....

Belkin Router Signal Weak

Wireless configurations are tempermental over larger distances. Some routers do have the ability to increase the signal strength to over come this, but a good location is key.

The more obsticals in the way the slower the connection will become. Closed doors, being buried under books, underneath desks, can all cause the signal to come through a slower speeds to compensate.

Make sure your router is in an elevated location to help with a less blocked signal.

Are you using a Wireless-N adapter on your computer? If not, you might need an extender because Wireless-G does not have the same range as -N.

With the model number of your Belkin router I might be able to assist more.

Connect my Lynksys WRT54G2 Router with my Belkin (F5D6231-4)

You can connect 2 routers to each other. But the IP address will be different for both the routers .
It will be better to keep different names for the wireless network.
If you keep the same name, then it doesn't mean that the signal strength will be good. Because both the routers will broadcast their own signals.
If you want to increase the signal strength then you can purchase a wireless range expander.
