Nuvi 255w Turns off (screen goes to black) after a few seconds to a few minutes. No consistency on amount of time. "Turn Off" may be incorrect - screen goes blank/black Sometimes i can immediately turn it back on- and same thing happens. Sometimes i cannot turn it back on for a long time. Regardless -same result every time. This happens regardless if it runs off of its battery or if it is connected to cigarette lighter. i have tried using different cars and different car charger cables - same result

I have a Garmin 255 myself. And what I have found is, MOST of the time, the problem is that the CHARGER CABLE has an intermittent connection in it! So, when the cable moves, flexes, or stretches, the battery charge STOPS, and the (mostly discharged) battery cannot support the load, so the unit blacks out and turns off. Try S-L-O-W-L-Y moving the cable while connected with the unit on, and watch for evidence of a bad cable! Sometimes a DIRTY (trapezoid- shaped) connector will do the same thing!

SOURCE: the sound on my nuvi

The fact that it appears on speaker, FM & headphone jack, tells me its a problem in the audio output stage.

SOURCE: garmin nuvi does turn on when connected to power in car

Hi

I had the same problem. My Nuvi 350 did not power up for a couple of days. I suspected moisture to be the culprit. So I took my wife's hair dryer and blew hot air(in the intermediate setting) into the SD card slot in the GPS for a couple of minutes. Take care not to overheat the GPS or Screen.
Pronto my GPS powered up without any issues.
Hope this helps

Garmin nuvi turns on, but goes black after attempting to load maps.

Try and connect the Nuvi to a PC / Mac using an USB cable. Connect the cable first before powering the PC / Mac - make sure the Nuvi is powered off.

Then turn on the PC / Mac. The Nuvi should go into communication mode making it possible to update the internet software (if available on MyGarmin.com). This might fix the problem.

If there's no software update available at MyGarmin.com - try a master reset. This will clear all user data (POI's / Favorites, Tracks, routes) going back to factory defaults.

A master reset is started by pressing the lower right corner for at least 20 seconds while pressing the power-on button once. A question appears to clear all user data.

Screen seems OK but there is no way to interface as it does not respond to touch. Unit is 255w and about 2 years old.

The solution to this problem is for you to calibrate the screen. Before calibrating the screen, i will advice you reset the gps. To reset your device, hold down the power button for about 15 seconds, it will restart itself and power up fully, if the touch screen does not still work, then calibrating the screen will do the job for you. To calibrate the screen, follow the steps below:
  1. Turn off your nuvi,
  2. Hold the upper left corner of the screen, then turn on the nuvi,
  3. Release the power key once the garmin screen appears,
  4. Continue to hold the upper left corner of the screen for 30 seconds till a white screen with 'touch dots' appears,
  5. Then follow the rest of the guide from there.
It might take a few tries before it works for you but you have to keep trying till you get it right. I am very certain that this will work for you.

What to do? touch screen just stopped working? worked, and then 30 minutes later nothing...turned off/on several times, can't enter PIN or push "view map".

Try to remove the battery and re insert it back in to see if it will work. Or hold down the power on/off for about 15 seconds, that should do the job.
If that does not do it, then calibrate the screen, to calibrate the screen, follow the steps below:
  1. Turn off your nuvi,
  2. Press your finger on the upper left corner of the touch screen,
  3. While holding your finger on the touch screen, turn on the nuvi.
  4. Continue to hold your finger on the screen for about 30 seconds until the calibration screen appears(white screen with touch dot),
  5. Then follow the on screen instructions.
That should do the job for you. hope this helps.

My garmin nuvi 255W has been working fine. I

Try resetting your unit with the reset button on the bottom. If this doesn't work, slide the power button all the way to the left and hold it for 8 seconds.

My garmin 255 nuvi will not power up. there is no reset button on this one and I have tried holding the power switch on for various amounts of time

let it charge via the usb for a few hours, then try holding the lower right corner of the screen, while holding that hold the power switch till it turns on then release when you see the message, "do you really want to delete all your data" <<< that erases your favorites and any other saved info, but that is how you reset your 255
