My Philips Magnavox, model 9P6034C103, chassis PTV835 is about 7 yrs old, past month acting up. When turn tv on picture would fluctuate from big to small and stay small for several minutes then will go back to normal NOW there's no picture, but has sound. Could someone give me more info as to what parts might need to replace? Thanks in advance
When you say small do you mean shrunk up top and bottom as well as from side to side. You definitely have a deflection problem either horizontal or vertical. If the picture just shrunk top and bottom you have a vertical deflection problem. Do you have the service manual for your model? If not let me know and I will email you one. Describe the shrinking issue a little more and I should be able to give you some guidance.
If the screen shrink then expands or if you have no sound and no video but the power light is on then this repair kit will help. http://www.magnavoxhelp.com

Its a older set: most common issue which can cause your problem is convergence short.
The only way to know is gain access to the two (should be stk-392-120 or -110) convergence chips have to be unsoldered (all 18 pins on both) and then the set turned on to see if it will power up---picture will look very bad but if set comes on the chips are bad.
If you do not have the skill or desire to try that it may be time to consider replacing the set.
I had dish satelight install on my TV. It worked well for two days, then the picture started showing in a square box. I ffixed the convergence and it seemed okay. The next day I turned on the tv and it had sound, but no picture. When I press the status button, the picture would come on then go right back out. Now I don't have any sound or picture. Here is the model information:

The fluid is a fairly easy replacement. They just need to remove the CRT with the bad fluid and drain the old fluid and clean the CRT and then replace the fluid. The Shrinking is just a Vertical Deflection problem which is also an easy repair. A new Vertical IC and a couple Capacitors. In my shop it would run @ $200.00 to fix both.
sounds like somthing may have gotten knoked loose in transportation. I'd check all the interneal connections, make sure its unpluged for a few hrs or a day before sticking unexperienced hands in there. there are some high voltage capcators in it. stay away from fat red wires the size of TV cable.
also call the people you got it from make sure they know your not holding them responsible and ask if they fixed anything recently or in the past espically the IC convergence chip and resisitors, usally those go on these sets.
Audio without video is usally a vertical or horizontal deflection problem with the DPTV chassis and Mag 1 chassis which is what you have. You may need a new deflection Large signal board. If you would like a link to one of those boards let me know.
You can also get a Factory Service manuals from www.magnavoxhelp.com. The manuals can be downloaded instantly. They are complete with over 2000 pages in all. Their manuals cover all projection TV models with Chasis # PTV835, PTV836, PTV840, PTV841, PTV842,PTV843, PTV844, PTV847,PTV853
It could be the flyback losing resistace in its windings. What is the chassis number I should have the service manual for it. Phillips/magnavox is hard to cross reference without the actual chassis number.
Was the hour glass upright or sideways? From what you described I would say you have a pin-cushion problem. Let me know if you need any additional info.
i have good sound, but no picture... i also have aphilips magnavox
