EMachines recommends DDR2 at 533MHz.
(PC2-4200)
A lot of ram memory manufacturers, state you can use DDR2 at 667MHz. (PC2-5300)
This is a logical statement due to the fact that a lot of motherboard chipsets, (Northbridge chip specifically),
will allow ONE step up in ram memory frequency rate.
You are going Two steps up.
Who told you this would work?
This is erroneous.
(Mean that in a nice sort of way)
PC 6400 is DDR2 at 800MHz.
Your eMachines T5082 motherboard uses an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 motherboard chipset.
This chipset will only support DDR2 at 667MHz at best.

Suggest you send that ram back, and get PC2-5300.
Testimonial: "Great job, downgrading was just what i needed to do. Thanks!"
I appreciate your additional comment, and understand your reasoning.
From your statement, I see that I am dealing with a person who is very intelligent, and uses deductive reasoning based on intelligent thought.
Note* It is better to have more, (Larger amount), of Ram Memory, than to worry about the frequency rate. ('Speed')

if you're not sure if a module is right for your system, use the Crucial Memory Advisor tool for a list of guaranteed compatible modules. first you will need to select the manufacturer from a drop down list then select your product line from a drop down list then select the model then click find it will take you directly to compatible ram also you will have an option to scan your system
hope it helps

I just assumed the pc2-6400 would work as it also said it was backwards compatible with 667 and 533, now i understand my mistake. The system will boot with 1 of these in and will run. But I was wanting to go the full 2GB. So I will try the next step down as you suggest, and use the PC5300 ram. I will get back with you and rate then answer once I have gotten the ram and tried this out. Thanks for your help.
I like to think I'm smart but sometimes have those days. I have ordered the ram and the delivery date isn't for about a week, so I will see what happens once it does come. Hoping it works. Yes, sometimes have more capacity is better then more speed, unless it's a huge difference. But in this case it's not, so more memory is a better deal. Especially since I plan on using the system as a secondary gaming system to play lan games with a friend.
Hopeful setup-
P4 3GHZ
(Upgrade- 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 as suggested)
Current- 1GB PC2-6400
XFX Ati Radeon HD 4650 w/ 1GB GDDR2
250GB HDD
430W PSU
Just planning on playing Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars over lan with a friend. I figure this system would be good enough for a playable game. Again thanks for the pointer and I will do a final rate once this is resolved. :)
I just wanted to say, I got my ram today, stuck it in and it worked!! Downgrading the speed like i should have in the first place was just what I needed to do. I will also keep this in mind from now on. Despite the fact that ram may say backwards compatible, only go up one speed or stay at the same speed. Thanks again!
