I raced to Staples and purchased $60.00 of new ink. I changed the ink and now my printer only prints in color...no black. I have cleaned, deep cleaned and cleaned again. All to no avail. I went online and seemed to find A LOT of people with Canon printers with similar problems. Is this something that Canon should do a recall on? My printer is not old at all. I have only bought Canon ink. Come on Canon, take care of this for me and for others!!!!!!

The ink detection is a critical function of the printer.

Ink actually acts as a lubricant for the heads, and running (Printing) without ink is equavalent to driving a car without oil.

I.E. It will seize eventually....

Hopefully you didn't print much without the ink, and your heads are still in good shape...

Here is a chip reset procedure....

With the original chip now attached to the compatible cartridge (you may need double sided tape to get the chip to stick well to the cartridge), and with the cartridge now in the printer, Press and hold the Reset/OK Button for 5 seconds to reset the chips.

  1. The "Ink Low" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 1 below)
  2. Continue to print until the "ink has run out" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 2 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print.
  3. The "Ink Low" dialog box may reappear, if so repeat the first 2 steps
  4. Then the "once empty" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 3 Below) Click "Yes" to continue to print
  5. The "Not Liable" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 4 below). Click "Yes" to continue to print
  6. Continue to print until the "remaining level of ink" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 5 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print
  7. Another dialog box will pop up with the "press and hold the Resume" or "press and hold the Paper Feed" button (similar to photo 6). Press and hold the "STOP/RESET" button (for Canon MP Series) or "PAPER FEED" button (for Canon IP Series) for 5 seconds. DO NOT Click "Back" or "Cancel Printing"
  8. The "Ink Monitor" dialog box will appear and the printer will continue to print. (similar to photo 7) In the event that that the "press and hold the Resume " dialog box pops up again, Press and hold the Paper Feed Button or Stop/Reset Button for 5 seconds

Make sure you select the AUTOMATIC PAPER LOAD in the printers page set up. Although the lights flash on the new cartridges it does print, no problem even with other types of ink

Change the black ink cartridge

I just refilled my black ink cartridge. But the ink is still not recognised. Every time I hit print it just shows that the ink can't be recognised. What shall I do?

If you refilled the cartridge, most likely the wafer chip on the ink cartridge is a self setting chip. What this means is once the ink runs out one time, the chip will either short or change a pattern to allow the cartridge to never work again (so you have to go out and buy their new ink) Some places sell a chip reset, or you can replace it will an OEM black ink.

If this all fails, than the print head (the carriage the ink sits in) is faulty

Ink cartridges not working in epson sx100 all in one printer

hi.make sure there is no tape or dirt on cartridge chip contacts.if still no joy trying iserting one cartridge at a time then installing.say insert black then will say others carts missing red blue yellow.keep going till they are installed.sometimes helps.make sure the carts have lastest chips installed version 5 or higher if compatable cart.should not be a problem if bought from epson.eg t711 etc will fit but must be new carts with new chip otherwise may not accept.i belive the sx100 has something like t811 or something.this may be the new chip.otherwise may just be a faulty chip on the cart.you can get refillable carts or ciss system on ebay you put in your own ink.they are brillant.cart chips reset when low ink.hope this may help.

Canon pixma mp210 printer - replaced ink cartridges with compatible ones - printer working fine except when printing both ink lamps come on solidly, not blinking, and status says there is no ink in...

Dear merryan,

This printer uses FINE cartridge which has memory chip inside that store ink level data. Once the cartridge is EMPTY we cannot restore this data to be FULL even though we physically refill ink until FULL. So the printer keep displays NO INK warning.

Similar with using compatible cartridge, NO INK warning still remain because ink level data has been recorded as empty. Why?. Here is the explanation. As far as I know no third party compatible cartridge produced this printer since canon protect it with the chip. Compatible cartridge that sold in the market is refurbish cartridge which repacked with another brand.

To fix this problem we need to deactivate ink level detection function by holding down STOP/RESET button for about 9 seconds or more for each cartridge. The consequence of this is ink level become UNKNOWN.
Hope this will be helpful to you

Xanda
