Rust in interior of gas stove top

I have a gas stove in a rental unit.
The tenant moved out. When we lifted the top plate for cleaning, we found the entire backside of the top plate covered in rust, plus rust "dust" was all over, around the burners.
What could possibly cause this large amount of rust in the interior (not the oven) of a gas stove? The tenant lived there only for 2 months.
Thank you for your help.

I have the same problem. This is the second stove to do that in our apartment building. I remember calling the Gas company last time, but I can't remember what the older employee told us why it happened. The only thing I can remember is it had something to do with the gas line..

SOURCE: I have a frigidaire GAS stove. Oven doesn't work.

Hello,
Even though the ignitor glows it does not mean that it is working...sounds crazy but it is true... the ignitor needs to pull a certain amperage to let the gas valve open and as they get older they stop pulling enough current...
Check out this tip I wrote about this problem...

sl, because it't happening to both broil and bake the first thing I would suspect is the temperature probe. You should ohm it out. You can do this either at the board or at the harness connection in back. For the board, remove the back panel, there should be a 8 pin connector to the left of 3 relays. On the harness measure the resistance of the wires going to pins 1 and 2. On the shemantic it shows them being the 2 on the bottom. Should read around 1100 ohms at room temp. If you cant get a good reading on it there, Remove the probe from the inside oven, remove the screws and pull it out until the harness connector comes through, disconnect it and ohm it out from there. I don't think that both ignitors would fail at the same time so Im leaning toward the probe. Catriver.

Soak the black stove caps in 1 part ammonia and 3 parts water. Let soak for several hours. I let it soak overnight. It should clean right up.

LOFRA LEF9EGP gas stove/electric oven - aluminium foil touching bottom element - is this safe?

The tin foil is there to reflect the heat and the lagging is to stop the heat from escaping.
I would think the foil should not be touching the element but otherwise, your description sounds plausible.

Change ceramic igniter on gas stove oven

Most ovens are servicable from the front by removing the shelves and lifting out the bottom. The lower cover may also be removable.

Moved insert about 3inches stove won't light

1st guess: moving the insert shook loose some rust in the pilot assembly, which is now blocking the flow of gas to the pilot.
Remove pilot hood if possible and/or clean out with compressed air.

good luck :-)

I just moved into a condo I am renting and the Tappan gas oven/stove stays hot when it is not even on. The part that is hot is the top between the burners. Is that normal?

Probably the pilot light. You should be able to lift the top of the stove for cleaning ... try lifting it ... to see and verify for yourself this is the case.

This is very typical of a stove fired by a pilot light.

DV-35 safety

The Empire DV units have been in production for over 25 years with very few problems and no class action suites. Although the heaters do get hot, so don't wood stoves, kitchen ranges, etc... I suppose they could put a sticker on the cover stating not to put anything on the heater, but I suppose it would burn off eventually. I would not worry about a statement of a faulty furnace because he/she would be fighting with a very large company with plenty of lawyers on the payroll. It should be expected that a heater will produce heat. If the tenant is concerned, remove the heater, install electric heat and let them pay the electric bill. I am sorry but your tenant needs to start using some common sense! There are no safeties built into this unit to detect when someone puts something flammable on it and I know of no heater that does. Remember, you did not make the heater, you did not spend thousands of dollars getting it tested and approval from UL, you may have purchased the heater and had it installed to provide a low cost alternative to other heating equipment but it is not you that is responsible for what has happened. If I were you I would hand deliver a note to each tenant who has this type of heater alerting them of the risk of damage if they left gloves, hats, buckets, etc.. on the heater and have them sign that they read it. The furnace is designed to be safe, burn clean and heat. Good luck.

Where the burners plug into the range, they seem to be shorting out and burning the plastic parts.{this is in a rental unit} This has happened twice in the same unit , on two different stoves, with in four...

your tenant is probably removing the top burners to clean and everytime you take the burners out the terminal block they plug into gets alittle weaker connection.
you can replace the receptacles and then file or sand the burner terminals.
it is very common and also pretty easy to fix.
you just remove the old receptacle block and the cut the 2 wires, reconnect the new block and wiring and thats about it.

Frigedaire stackable takes forever to dry

One way to tell if it has a heater element problem is to use an Amprobe to read how much current the dryer pulls when operating. If the amps are 2/3, 1/2, or 1/3 of what it's supposed to pull, then it's an element problem, and you need to fix that.

My only question is, how long would it take to dry that same load of sheets when the unit was new, and does the time now compare to the then?

My oven wont light

The problem is likely a faulty igniter. It's an easy fix, though an expensive part to replace (about $75 from APP). I had the exact problem and found this answer on another site. Just check out your igniter (under the plate on the bottom of your oven.. remove the screws in the back and lift off that plate).. the igniter is a long flat piece that should be glowing red.. if not.. that's your problem. Good luck.
