I bought a used coleman powermate 5000 generator, I replaced the spark plug and fuel filter, it finally started up,it would only run in the "choke" position it ran about 10 minutes and then shut down, I removed air filter it wasn't too dirty, but it seems like engine is flooded.

What brand of engine & horsepower is it?Also about how long was it stored or last time it was run? The reason I ask is if it was stored with gas in it & a fuel stabilizer wasn't added to it,your primary jet is plugged in the carburetor(reason it will only run while choked).

Generator starts and runs in choke position only. shuts down in run position.

There is fault in the fuel settings, you might need to remove and clean the carburator, clean the air filter and also check if the oil is clogged.
Also remove the plug and check for dirt electrode tips, if so the spark plug must be replaced. Set with the correct gap , test for the spark before it is replaced.
Also check if there is impurities on the fuel. The carburator resetting must be done with care and take help if needed.

How do i start a powermate 5000

choke it and pull the cord, if it has set for a long time, you may need to pull the spark plug and put a drop or 2 of gas in the cyilinder, reinstall the plug andwire and it should start.

Coleman Generator starting problems

If you started it for just a minute, it never got warmed up and MAYBE the spark plug fouled. Check it first.

Sometimes one forgets where to set the choke for starting. And if engine is already warm from a short run they can be hard to start if too much choke is used and it floods... Again, when you check the plug, if it is wet this MAY be the problem.

To check fuel getting to the engine I have used an UNLIT propane torch into the carb to give an engine a mixture that it can run on without flooding. You usually have to remove the air cleaner to do this. That is a trick I have used for "cranky" engines.

Since you stired up the gas, the fuel filter may have got plugged.

We have a Coleman Powermate 5000 generator that won't start

It is really common for generators and things that are not used really often to have the fuel turn to varnish in the gas tank, and carburetor. If it smells like really old fuel, you may be in for a tough time, but before you give up, pour out all the old fuel, and replace it with clean fuel. Then try to choke the engine as you normally would. If it does NOT start and run normally, take the spark plug out, and dip it into the gas tank and quickly put it into the engine, and re-attach the wire and give it a pull. It should hit a few times if you have good electrical fire to the plug. If it starts, kill the engine, and tighten the plug. If it does not start after trying this a couple of times, the carburetor will meed cleaning of the old varnish and jells.
