You PS3 is programmed for the United States region. Unfortunately, you are restricted to playing only games that are US regioned. They did this to curtail gray-market purchasing. There are rumors of a PS3 that will be released region-free!

Please go through the booklet provided with your PS3. It will show you what type of DVDs it can play. Make sure that the South African DVDs you are playing are compatible with the one listed in the booklet. Best is to play Blue ray DVD which are slightly expansive but are regional code free. They can be played on PS3 without any hitch.

Testimonial: "yes it was helpfuful thnx but it dont even wanna play blue ray discs...can i download something?"

Sorry for being late as my internet was down.
1 Please upgrade the system software by connecting to internet. This will renew the encryption key for AACS- Advanced Access Control System.
2 Increase the viewer age restriction in parental control settings. Some BDs are preset with parental control restrictions
3 These tpes of BDs can be played - BD - Rom, BD -R, BD - RE
4 Once again check the region code which shold be commensurate with your region

The PS3 can only play Blu-ray movies from the region the console is locked to. If you are stuck by the region code. you can simply get a region-free Blu-ray player which enables you to play region-locked Blu-ray and DVD.
You can try a player program such as Leawo Blu-ray Player which is free to use.
Also, you can use a program called Leawo Blu-ray Copy to make a lossless copy of your Blu-ray disc and remove the Blu-ray region code on it while doing so. You can check on this:

My ps3 is not playing any original dvds code 3 and code 2 what should i do?

PS3's are dvd region specific meaning that if it was made in north america it will only play dvd's in region one. The dvds in these region codes are not compatible with a region 1 device which your ps3 is. 2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, French overseas territories, Greenland 3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, MacauAlso the reason they have these codes is so that they can limit what goes out to each region, so certain content can be viewable in what is legal in that region. My recommendation is to sadly, repurchase the dvds anywhere in North America and they'll compatible.

Will a playstation 3 bought in USA work in South Africa

Yes, but it simply depends on the games region codes as the PS3 (US) uses NTSC while the South African games may us PAL.

I bought a playstation 3 in South Africa and have moved to Australia and I can get any game or DVD to play on it that I have bought in Australia why?

I think you wanted to write that you CAN'T watch DVDs or play games bought in Australia on your PS3.
The reason is the region code of your playstation. It only can play Region Code 2 DVDs and games. In Australia you only can buy Region Code 4 media.
You need to buy your media from south africa or Europe. Some blueray-discs are region code free. You can check this on: http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/
As far as I know it's not possible at the moment to change the region code of the play station.

Playstation 3

Very odd that it will play Bluray DVDs but not games. It could be an issue with the harddrive since many games store important information the harddrive and then read it off of there. I suppose the issue could be cropping up because the PS3 cannot access that information on your harddrive thus causing it to fail to play those titles.

What you could try is backing up all the information you have on your harddrive and then formatting it etc. This should clear any corruption. To test if it is indeed any corrupted data then you can test a newly formatted harddrive and see if that allows you to play games just fine. If you have a spare 2.5" SATA HDD lying around, then go ahead and use that as your test drive (keep in mind it will have to be formatted by the PS3 etc).

Hope this helps.

American PS3 in South Africa

Hey thomas952,

While they may not be region-coded, PS3 consoles and games sold within the United States are going to be NSTC compliant, instead of the PAL format used in the United Kingdom and South Africa. What this means is that in order for any game to display properly (or even operate) it must be purchased from the same region of the world as the console itself - NTSC games can only be played on NTSC consoles.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
