You PS3 is programmed for the United States region.
Unfortunately, you are restricted to playing only games that are US regioned.
They did this to curtail gray-market purchasing.
There are rumors of a PS3 that will be released region-free!
Hope this helps!

Please go through the booklet provided with your PS3. It will show you what type of DVDs it can play. Make sure that the South African DVDs you are playing are compatible with the one listed in the booklet. Best is to play Blue ray DVD which are slightly expansive but are regional code free. They can be played on PS3 without any hitch.
Testimonial: "yes it was helpfuful thnx but it dont even wanna play blue ray discs...can i download something?"
Sorry for being late as my internet was down.
1 Please upgrade the system software by connecting to internet. This will renew the encryption key for AACS- Advanced Access Control System.
2 Increase the viewer age restriction in parental control settings. Some BDs are preset with parental control restrictions
3 These tpes of BDs can be played - BD - Rom, BD -R, BD - RE
4 Once again check the region code which shold be commensurate with your region

The PS3 can only play Blu-ray movies from the region the console is locked to. If you are stuck by the region code. you can simply get a region-free Blu-ray player which enables you to play region-locked Blu-ray and DVD.
You can try a player program such as Leawo Blu-ray Player which is free to use.
Also, you can use a program called Leawo Blu-ray Copy to make a lossless copy of your Blu-ray disc and remove the Blu-ray region code on it while doing so. You can check on this:
