Hey guys having a problem with my DR165 DVD Recorder. Mainly with DVD playing and DVD recording (so the main function I was interested in when purchasing it). We put in DVD's to play (Newly bought ones) and it says reading (for 30sec) and then spits it out and says unknown DVD (please check disk again) on tv screen. When new DVD+R disks( Verbatum and Base models) are placed into machine they also come up with this error. Any hints ? and is this related to the fact that when you go to home menu I only have the Setup, Tv and Easy menu options available to me and not options like Movie, Photo Music ??? or do these come available when that media type is inserted??

If your dvd contains video files and songs and photo files, it will let you to access them all in individual category. you can select them one by one , by pressing title button in the remote. the frequent problem being faced by this recorder is that taking too much time to recognize the tipe of file, it's very big bug. you may change the lens to recover this error.

It claims to play -RWs finalized in DVD-VIDEO format, not VR. If a disc is recorded/finalized on a different recorder, not all players can play it. This is the price we pay for the convenience of the digital system.

Can not read disc
I mainly use my DVR to record TV shows on DVD-RAM discs (Panasonic brand or Maxell). I've had no problems with the DVD-RAM discs. However, today when I put a DVD-R disc in the recorder, I got an "Incompatible Disc" error message. I tried a second disc from the same set, and got the same message. I tried out some of the DVD-Rs that I recorded last year and I could read them. Tried a DVD-RAM. That was OK. So, I tried another DVD-R disc. That one is OK. I don't know if the problem is that these DVD-Rs are getting a little old (2 years??) or if the recorder is developing its own problems reading discs.

DVDs recorded on HR720 do not play on any other player or PC!
Hi there,

not sure if this will solve your issue. But in order to be able to see the DVD recorded on the HR720 (or typically any other DVD recorder) you need to "lock" it. This is done in the File Manager Menu. The DVD recorder will ask you twice, whether you want to "lock" the disk. Once you have done that it will format the DVD like a normal DVD-Video, meaning it can be played on any regular DVD player. However, once locked you cannot re-open the DVD.
Hope this helps. Otherwise check in the user manual under "recording a DVD" - it is mentioned also there.

I had the same problem. It was fixed under warranty. It was some sort of alignment problem. It would not play SOME commercially produced DVD's either.

Sounds like the laser head carriage slides or screw drive need oil or the screw drive may have dirt in it that will cause uneven movement or possible jamming of the carriage on the slide.

The carriage and drive screw need to move smoothly. The slides can easly be oiled. The screw however can be difficult to clean. Using paper can make it worse due to the paper fibre getting into the screw as well. You could try a lint free material to clean the screw and then oil it, preferably with a non drying oil.
