HDMI sound? I have an xbox 360 and DVD player plugged into the two HDMI inputs to this receiver, and then HDMI from the receiver to my TV. However, when playing a DVD or the Xbox, no sound comes from the speakers, it ports it through to the TV, so sound comes out of the TV speakers. can this receiver not play audio from the HDMI, or is there a fix?

thats weird, and pretty annoying.. oh well, I'll just pick up a couple optical cables.. so much for my 3 cord total system =P

It seems that the HDMI input on this unit does not decode audio, it is only a switch to allow you to select between 2 different sources.A sneaky marketing manoeuvre to allow them to put HDMI on the box without actually doing anything with it.

I had the same problem with my PS3. I have a HD cable box with HDMI out, a Sony DVD player with HDMI out. The Sony receiver STR-DG800 only has the HDMI inputs (sat/tv and dvd) and the HDMI is only a pass through port and will not decode audio.
I purchase a HDMI 4 port switch from Newegg (HS-41A0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812168003&Tpk=HS-41A0) to hook up the DVD and PS3 to the DVD HDMI and switch between the DVD player and the PS3. It took me several days to figure out how to make this work with the settings on the reciver.

1 the DVD player must use the coaxial in jack for sound on the receiver.
2. the PS3 must use the optical connection on video1
3. the sound settings in the PS3 must be set to PCM
4. set the sound setting on the receiver to the following

a. on the remote press AMP button then the MENU button, next press the down arrow to you see 5- AUDIO SET - then press enter.
b.set sound decode priorty to PCM
c. next scroll down to you see digital assign - press enter
assign VID1 OPTICAL to DVD ( this allows the pcm output from the PS3 to play through the receiver), next assign DVD to COAXIAL setting DVD to DVD (this allows the digital sound to play from your DVD player).

So when you use your remote and select DVD, you can use your PS3 or DVD through the 1 DVD HDMI port.

I am new at this, as i just got a receiver with hdmi ports as well. but the receiver will not transmit audio through hdmi, you have to use either the optical cables, coaxial inputs, or the rca red and white inputs.

Hook up xbox 360 tv

What kind of receiver? Do you have anything else like DVD player going thru receiver? My receiver has 3 hdmi in and 1 out (to tv) so all those equipment would just go to "hdmi" on tv.
Another way to do it is put your tv on exterior audio... for all sound to go thru your receiver.

Samsung ps wx30 surround sound system. speakers are plugged in to dvd player. dvd player is connected to tv via hdmi cable. speakers only work when using dvd player and not tv/sky etc.. am i missing some...

Hi,here is my simple solution...
To listen your TV on your
samsung ps wx30 surround sound system ,
** you need to connect "Audio Output " RCA jacks or "Optic cable output" or "HDMI out " of your TV unit
** to "AUX input " or "TV" OR "Any input" of your
dvd player or "Optic Cable input" or "HDMI input"
** than just switch to respective mode on
dvd player corresponding your RCA or Optic connection or HDMI ..
.
There you go..Your TV sound is on the
dvd player By this means whatever you watch on the
TV (
tuner, satellite , Xbox , etc..) ,it's sound will come thru your
dvd player.

Hope this helps!..if more he?p requires pls let me know..
Take care and please

I'm trying to set up my Onkyo HT-r380 receiver (which came in the HT-S330 home theater system). I can get AM and FM radio to play on all the speakers. I can not get sound from my XBOX 360. The 360 is...

I looked at the manual and they provided the following settings.

To listen to audio received by the HDMI IN jacks through your TV's speakers:
  • Set the "TV Control" setting to "On" (? 37) for an p-compatible TV.
  • Set the "Audio TV OUT" setting to "On" (? 36) when the TV is not compatible with p or the "TV Control" setting to "Off".
  • Set your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player's HDMI audio output setting to PCM.
  • To listen to TV audio through the AV receiver, see "Connecting External Components" (? 17).

XBox 360 to Reciever to TV via HDMI no sound

I recently got the same receiver and had the same problem. Here's what I was told - and it worked for me:

Even though HDMI cables carry audio and video, for whatever reason this reciever won't accept audio through hdmi. Apparently only much more expensive recievers carry audio through hdmi. What you have to do is run optical audio cables from your xbox, cable box, dvd player or other video device to the optical inputs on the back of the reciver. Then you customize the scene buttons to match your video and audio inputs.

You can get these optical cables pretty cheap on line or even at target. Don't get ripped off by Best Buy for these cables. I love best buy, but they rip off on cables!

This receiver is great - once I got it all figured out and running right I've loved it! Hope everything works out for you!

Sony str-dg820. having a problem getting video on tv

Hook up Composite / Component Monitor Out wire from receiver to TV video input because receiver will not change analog input into HDMI
You need to connect receiver and TV through analog video terminals as above.
Actually you are expecting that receiver will convert DVD player and Xbox analog video input into digital HDMI signal for TV and This is incorrect.

Xbox 360

There are a couple of options you can use.

Are your DVD and cable actually going to the Onkyo first and then to the TV? I am assuming it is, if you listen to the Onkyo when watching a DVD or cable.

The Onkyo receiver you have has 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.

Does your Xbox360 have an hdmi output and that is what you want to connect to the Onkyo? Some do and some don't.

If your Xbox has a hdmi output and you are already using the 2 hdmi inputs on the Onkyo, you can not connect the Xbox using the hdmi, you have no more hdmi to connect to, so you must go thru one of the other inputs of the Onkyo.

The hdmi has the video and audio together, the other video options do not. you would need to run seperate audio cables as well.
Your Xbox should have a composite video (yellow RCA jack) output or a component video (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green RCA jack) output.

When you connect the Xbox thru, lets say the composite video of the Onkyo , you will also need to connect the audio from the Xbox to the Onkyo on the same input. It should be right next to the yellow RCA jack or right under it. They are 2 RCA jacks, one red and one white.

You will then need to connect the composite output of the Onkyo to the composite input of the TV.

When connecting like this, you will also need to select the composite input on your TV with your remote for your TV. Your TV should have an input button that lets you go thru all the different inputs to it.

you can also use the component video from the Xbox if it has that. But you must also run the audio to the Onkyo as well to the corresponding audio inputs of the component video input on the Onkyo.

This may sound a little confusing, but remember that the hdmi has the audio and video in one cable, the other video options do not, so you must run additional cables for the audio to the Onkyo from the Xbox.

Also remember whichever video you use from the Xbox to the Onkyo, you must also run that same video from the Onkyo to the TV and then switch the TV over to that input when you want to watch the Xbox on the TV
