Freezing up can be caused by the GPU and the CPU overheating and before the red lights you can use a good xbox360 repair guide to repair it or you can send it in and get it fixed.

If it freezes and then the next time you turn it on has red lights on the console display check out the corresponding Microsoft articles for the number of red rings on the display. They appear in quadrants on it.
1 red ring
2 red rings
3 red rings
4 red rings

If you do not have any rings, your console may just be overheating. Give it a while to cool down and if that doesn't work, give Microsoft a call: 1-800-4MYXBOX. Good Luck!

SOURCE: Xbox 360 Freeze!!

It's a common fault with X boxes, the red lights indicate overheating, so make sure it is well ventillated and if neccasary you can purchase an add on cooler for the system.

Also check to ensure that your console has good airflow. The console itself may be overheating if there are too many objects near it blocking airflow.

Xbox 360 freezing

The freeze ups normally happen before the red lights of doom and they are caused by the GPU and the CPU getting too hot and the soldering snaps off so they lose connection.

If you stop the heat build up you will be fine.

You can do this yourself using a good repair guide or you can send it in and they will fix it for you.

Freezes and stops

If the 360 was ON when it fell or recently turned off then there might be a chance that the GPU connections were softened from the heat of being used. If this is the case set the 360 on its side, as in horizontally and turn it on for around 30 minutes and then turn it off and let it cool down for 30 minutes. This should warm up the GPU connections and then cool them down in the proper positions.

It's best if you leave the 360 on it's side then vertically.

My game stops after about 4 minutes

Heya,
Does the screen freeze or do you get any red lights on the Xbox ring?

Xbox has alot of problems with the console and your best bet would be to contact Mircosoft on

http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/contact

They will ask for your console to be sent of for a couple of weeks and she will be as good as gold. Alot of people have this problem.

Xbox 360

Well thats very hard to do, the problem is that the xbox is overheating, more specific the GPU, thats why it freezes. The easy way would be to open your xbox an leave it that way, I have a xbox that works just when is all open with the parts expose. Very strange but it works. Also put some new thermal compound on your GPU and heatsink.
You could make the room where you play very cold so the xbox will not overheat or put some big fans near the xbox hoping they cool it down. Or stop playing like 15 minutes every 2 hours so it cools.
