You can remove that short length of pipe very easily. Just pull it away from the fitting at the vacuum end and unscrew it from the brush bar end. While you've got it off, check it for splits (which are common) and replace it with a new one if it is damaged.

Guru, thank you. I had been fiddling with this for about 2 hours not wanting to pull at anything. Anyway as you said it pulled off from one end and the screws i thought impossible to reach suddenly were. Hugely fiddly job but solved. i am a hero in my own home

Ensure the foot pedal is pressed down fully at the rear of the dyson and check the button beside the on switch is also pressed down ( it will not work properly standing vertical :-)
