Can connect desktop to internet but having trouble connecting laptop to internet

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Does the laptop have a wireless Internet connection card? Have you assigned your router a special SSID (basically a special name for your wireless connection)? Have you attempted to change the channels or the bands on which the router broadcasts its wireless signal?

First of all get your connection to teh laptop from the router wired. Then, please ping the routers IP ( Start --> Run -- > cmd --> ping 192.168.x.x.)
Look at the manual for routers IP address.
If you are getting four replies, you have a valid connection, else, try changing cables or ports in the router.
Once this is done remove the cable, try wireless. To do that, ensure, to start off, there is no security on the router. Repeat the ping procedure keeping the router closer to the laptop ( for a good signal strength )
If you are not going online yet, let me know what happens.
hope this helps
Thanks
Ranjit

Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

Wireless Network working on laptop, lost internet on desktop.

If you disconnect the desktop from the modem, were you able to get an Internet connection in your laptop?
In order to get Internet connectivity on your desktop at the same time with the laptop, then the desktop needs to be connected to the router. It should be connected to one of the Ethernet ports at the back of the router. Since, your desktop doesn't have an Ethernet port, then you need to connect a USB to Ethernet adapter to your desktop. Then from that adapter, you will connect to it an Ethernet cable going to the router.

You may check the following models:
Linksys USB200M
Linksys USB100TX
Belkin Gigabit USB 2.0 Network Adapter(F5D5055)
D-Link DUB-E100

There are other brands that offer USB to Ethernet adapters that you can check.

Hope this helps!

I have problems playing videos on my laptop off the internet just keeps stoping and loading all the time and the sound keeps cutting off

The trouble is with your metwork connection through which the Laptop connects to the Internet. There is no proven way to increase the speed of connectivity. You may check your connection speed from the two-computer icons on the bottom-right corner and determine the speed. A speed of 2 mbps or more is ideal for viewing videos on internet.

you need to set up the internet connection in your router, to do this enter the router's IP address into your internet browser, then press enter (by default it should be 192.168.2.1) This will take you to your router settings page, be carfull what settings you adjust. their should be a section to set up an internet connection (it might be under WAN connection) you will probbably need your username and password given to you by your ISP.
