You don't need the CD
Easiest way to transfer photos is:
Buy a card reader and take card out of camera, put it in card reader and copy photos to a folder on your PC
or
Connect camera to computer with usb lead supplied and follow on screen instructions
You can use the camera without the installation CD. The CD may contain some useful photo editing program and help you download the photos from the camera to your computer using the USB cable.
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then removethe memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader.Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of yourworking computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device oran external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card andcopy the photos to your computer.Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. Youcan copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off yourmemory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing anyprograms.
Determine how the camcorder works. There are 3 basic modes of capturing stills with a camcorder. Read your instruction manual for specific information.
Step 2
Understand freeze-frame stills. The most common and least effective method is a "photo mode." Basically, the camcorder will simply freeze a frame of video for a few seconds, which can then be extracted later as a still.
Step 3
Use editing software to capture stills. This method is similar to the first, and can be done with any camcorder. Download an editing program or use the camcorder's bundled software. Then transfer the video over to your computer and use the software to pull out stills.
Step 4
Understand built-in digital cameras. This is a more expensive option, but results in higher quality photos. These cameras have built-in memory cards and function basically the same as a stand-alone digital camera. Refer to the manual to switch over to digital camera mode, then point and shoot. The photo quality is usually a bit lower than from a stand-alone camera.
Step 5
Compare specifications. Understand that specifications for high quality video don't necessarily translate to high quality stills. CCD determines the quality of video, while megapixels determine the quality of stills.
Step 6
Consider the value. Whether or not a combination digital camera and camcorder is best for you depends on how you'll be sharing your photos
Photos viewed on the camera screen usually appear to have "better" quality than on your computer screen because the tiny camera screen masks out many of the defects that are there. The computer screen is big and will show all of the defects clearly.
Because the 50D is the newer model it is quite a bit more expensive than the 40D. However, the reviews don't find that the quality has improved very much. Unless the 50D has a feature you simply must have, the 40D is going to be a much better value.
Neither has video capabilities. If you want the best video capabilities as well as top-quality still photos, without spending tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, take a look at the 5D Mark II. This camera has amazing video capabilities for the price (under $3k). Most camera stores have a long waiting list so if you want this model you will have to put your name on a list and wait at least a few weeks before you get your camera.
