Replacing time on Maytag Atlantis washer; DIY? Worth doing?

I have a Maytag Atlantis washer, model #MAV6257AWW. Repair person says I need a new timer (when you pull out the cycle knob, nothing happens unless it's on "spin," which is all it will now do. This was very sudden, no warning problems). Cost to do this (close to $300) is over the max we agreed we would spend before just getting a new washer, so I'm wondering how difficult this would be to fix ourselves; the part would cost around $100 retail, from what I can see. Also, I've seen lots of negative reports on this washer--it's probably about 9 years old, has worked fine until now, is it worth fixing?

SOURCE: grouling noise in the spin cycle

First, check the belt (located in the bottom of the unit) and if it shows signs of wear (black dust) and shiny sides on belt and black marks on the motor, transmission, and water pump pulleys - replace the belt. The motor is spring loaded and acts as the tensioner up to a point of too much wear on the belt.

You will need to tilt the washer about 45 degrees and prop it to keep it from going all the way over (just makes it more difficult to right it later). Pop the belt off by rotating it while pulling the belt off the edge of the transmission (larger) pulley. Again, the motor pulley is spring loaded and will flex appropriately. Reverse the process with installation of a new (exact replacement part number).

If this doesn't fix the problem, you may have to call the Maytag Repairman. They would have replaced the belt anyway and would probably charge $50 + for the belt and installation.

Maytag Atlantis MAV6257AWW

I have a Maytag Atlantis MAV6257AWW. I need to replace the transmission. So I removed all four screws from the inner tub but I couldnt get the inner tub pull out, it's stuck.

From what I read on here, the seal nut doesn't have to be remove in order to remove the inner tub.

I tried every, I even hammer the shaft down from the inside of the tub but still no luck. Can someone help, thanks.

If your timer has a gray rubber ring on it, the timer is in 4 pieces. Pull the top middle part out. Then there's a white locking piece in the center. Once that's out the other 2 pieces will pull out. Note: The photo shows the top cover removed. The locking pin is the white center. RanchMom
