My automatic timer is not working.

You posted under Intermatic raintight timer.
Add a comment with your model and brand and I have extensive files on timers.

The best diagnostic is the manual override.
1) Click manual override and see if Load (lights, fan, motor) come on.
If manual override clicks on-and-off crisp and clean, but the lights do not come on, check your electric power.
If the manual override does not click crisp and clean, then the timer may be rusty, or timer may need to be replaced. Buy replacement timer and swap out timer mechanisms without changing the box.
If the manual override works fine, and Load turns on-and-off with manual override, then the clock or trippers are next suspect.

2) Check if the dial is turning as time passes.
If the dial is not turning, then the clock motor is bad and you can buy a new clock motor.
If dial is turning, and manual override turns Load on-and-off, then the tripper pins might be worn out, and you can buy new trippers.

3) To buy replacement parts: Timer door has model number of timer. Timer clock located on back of timer mechanism has identifying numbers. You can snap out the timer mechanism using metal spring locate top inside box.
Grainger sells trippers and motors:

Aplus sells motors:

The timer clicked OFF but poot pump kept running. Had to trip breaker to stop pool pump.

Your Intermatic timer has a manual override.
The override is a good diagnostic.
Click the manual override and see if pump turns on and off.

Next, watch if the clock is rotating.
If the clock is rotating, the OFF tripper may be worn out and you need a new tripper

If the clock wheel is not rotating, you need a new clock motor.
If you have T104, your clock motor is 240Volts
If you have T101 or T103, your clock motor is 125Volts
Buy trippers and clock motors at Grainger
Clock motor replacement takes a small star-screwdriver bit
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/timer-accessories/timers/electrical/ecatalog/N-8hi

If your manual override is not working, then the gears might be rusty and need to be cleaned or your timer needs to be replaced.
You can buy same model number timer and then swap the insides without changing boxes.

Clock does not work to turn pool filter on and off. do I need a new timer mechanism or clock motor

Things to check:

1) Is yellow dial rotating? If not, then clock motor is probably bad. T-100 240V time clock motor sells for $16 at grainger.
Also timer may not be getting 240V so check manual override.

2) If clock motor is turning, but manual override never clicks on-and-off, then pins are probably worn out. Buy pins at grainger

3) Does manual override work? Does it click crisp? If manual override clicks crisp on-and-off, and pool filter turns on-and-off normally, then a) the circuit is getting 240V and b) the timer mechanism is ok ... so clock motor is probably bad.

4) If manual override snaps crisp but pool timer does not turn on, then then circuit breaker could be bad, wire is loose, motor has gone bad
Test for 240 across poles 1 and 2
... or timer contacts are worn out & you need new T-104
See back of mechanical timer

5) If manual override is loose or sluggish, then you need new T104. You can buy a T-104, T-104R, T-104M etc ... and the interior body will snap into old box.

Note: Do not buy T-101 or T-103 as these have 120V motor.

The timer knob spins freely and I can't start the machine or set the timer.

"Can I replace it with a new knob or do I have to buy a new timer?"

It sounds like the knob is rounded out where it fits on the timer post, or It may just be loose. Pull the knob off and inspect it. If damaged, yes, you can buy another one.
