Kenmore 158.1703 sewing machine - needle not going up and down

I recently bought a used Kenmore 158.1703 sewing machine. Machine appears to be in great condition, Motor clean, etc. Was able to wind bobbin. Now, I'm ready to sew, but when I press the pedal, the needle does not go up and down -- i can hear the motor revving, but nothing moves. Is there a certain setting I need to use? Help!

Yes, when I turn the handle, the needle goes up and down. I can manually sew some stitches. Ideas?

Sounds like your worm drive gear is striped and needs to de replaced. If you twist the handel on the end of machine does the needle move up and down.

The machine sounds like it has threads caught in the bobbin area thus locking the machine up. Check in there and maybe you can pick them out with tweezers. They may need to be 'softened up' with a little oil before you can get them out!. also Please push the bobbin winder back to the left position and it will release the bobbin winder. Then you should be able to sew. If the needle won't move, you will need to tighten the turning wheel on the right side end of the machine. This should move your needle. Then you should be set to sew.
------This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Hello. Check these:
1. Make sure the presser foot is lowered. 2. If the bobbin winder shaft was left in the winding position move it back. 3. If the button hole lever was not lowered when machine was placed in buttonhole mode, lower it. Regards, Joe

SOURCE: can't put thread on bobbin

I cannot tell what your problem is. The winder isn't working? The bobbin won't hold the thread so it will fill?

There are threading guides at the sewusa website that may be helpful as they include written instructions along with graphics.

Kenmore sewing machine my sewing machine won't sew, it just makes a noise

If it's an older mechanical machine, it most likely has seized due to lack of recent, thorough oiling. Refrain from forcing the machine to run as it could damage the motor.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

My Kenmore Sewing Machine's needle is locked down

best suggestion try inserting new needle. cotton up the top suggests needle problem or incorrect top thread tension, this would effect the feed dog. Because thread is black and most recent use was with pink, the problem thread was already there perhaps in cavity above bobbin but below throat plate. I have had this happen and nothing will move, untill needle released. The bobbin holder tension may also need adjusting after the knots of black cotton are removed.

We recently bought a used 301 Singer Sewing machine, it appears to sew well but makes a loud clattering sound, where the needle goes up & down, is this typical for this machine?

If I remember the 301 is an American model slant needle with a gear driven motor, the machines were known as 'Rockets' the noise you can hear is the play in the shaft of the motor which is very common to that model if it is where the noise is coming from, if the noise is coming from the needle area then a drop of oil might do it some good.

Kenmore sewing machine

Have you changed the needle? If you have sewn for many hours it may just be a matter of a new needle. Be sure to use flat back kenmore or kenmore compatiable needles...no Singer (too long).
