SOURCE: Whirlpool Duet Dryer is scorching clothes

there is a sensor in the exhaust line in the dryer, near the motor. this tells the heating element to shut off when it gets to a certain temp, either during reg cycle or if the exhaust gets clogged, it is meant as a safety measure, but it sounds like yours is bad so the heating element never shuts off. it is not an expensive part and easy to replace

It sounds like what you're describing is a weak clutch. The clutch could be worn & slipping or may have oil residue on the clutch pads. I would recommend replacing the clutch. Here is a link to the part.

Burning smell

Stop using the dryer! You are probably close to having a fire if you continue to use it. The whole vent system should be taken apart, cleaned, the heat limit sensors checked and the duct cleaned. Your dryer is overheating and is a danger.

Lint trap

There should be a rectangular flap on the top panel at the rear right of your dryer. the lint filter is in a chute if there is just a hole here then the filter is missing.
