My camera was working fine at the ball. I had taken 5 pictures when the camera stopped working. The lens came out and then I saw E18 in the display. Not only did I miss taken wonderful pictures that night the camera is like a paper weight now with the lens fully extended. I can hear a clicking noise when the camera is turned on but after a few seconds the error code appears and the camera shuts off. I have tried tapping it on the side already and useing compressed air and it still doen not work.My camera was working fine at the ball. I had taken 5 pictures when the camera stopped working. The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try:
- If you need clarification, ask it in the comment box above.
- Better answers use proper spelling and grammar.

This is a very common in digital camera's caused by debris getting into the lens housing, get a can of compressed air attach the straw and give it one or two blasts between the crevice "camera body and lens housing" try the power! if that fails, try tapping on the lens housing with the side of your finger "gently" if successful aim the lens down towards the floor and extend and retract the lens a few times to further clean out any additional grit.
Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.
E18 is the standard Canon lens error. The lens gets stuck when extending. If you did not drop it and there are no signs of damage you can check with Canon and try to get the camera repaired under warranty.
If it is not covered here are a few methods to try on your own, at your own risk. http://www.e18error.com/repair.html
Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off. This is caused by dirt in between the telescoping portions of the lens. You can clean this with compressed air, generally. Blow air all around the turret sections of the lens. you can also GENTLY push the lens inward ( have the lens extended and take the battery out... then push inward...)

Apparently, people who posted about this incident on
forums say they had to send the camera for repair and that Canon has
horrible customer support and response time.
-Basically what it came down to is if it's under warranty, get it replaced. If not, try using compressed air to blow out dirt and dust from the lens and all reachable components.
Or just gently push the lens back.
It is a Canon design malfunction and has happened on plenty of cameras.
My Canon 40D digital SLR loves to give me Error 5, and my flash wont pop up. It's just an unfortunate side affect of owning a Canon.
Canon Powershot's error E18 has to do with the lens:
If it appears on a black LCD with E18 written on the corner, it is mostly due to the lens getting stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off. I am giving below a link which will help you with E18 problem.

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:
I had the same problem. The fix worked.
