Contrary to your advice, the nozzel cannot be connected directly to the powerhead--the female openings are set closer together in the nozzel than the male plugs in the powerhead.

Your hose could be bad. The wires frequently go bad up by the handle switch. also could possibly be the wand, those go bad. You can check that by attaching your powermate directly to the nozzle without the wand and see if the same problem is there. Do you have the mini powermate also? the one that is usually mounted on the wand. If so plug that in directly to the hose and see if you have the same problem. If that tool works fine then the problem is in the powerhead.

If unit beater has stopped working it is either the motor, the power connection to beater or the belt that powers the roller. Which is it?

See if you can download the manual from the mfg or google for it.

I have a Kenmore progressive cannister vacuum cleaner.

There should be a pile height pedal on rear of the attachment, just behind the where the wand goes into it, near the handle release pedal. Just keep clicking on it to go through the height settings.

I have the same problem with intermitant power, however, it does not make sense that the problem is in the upper powerhead (which is what a repair guy told me) because-- when I use the other attachements...

You can test the auxiliary plug to the roller/beater attachment with a volt meter if you know how and take precautions. Check for 115-120 volts at the beater/roller attachment plug. If voltage is there and the beater/roller doesn't run, the problem is with the attachment. If not, then the problem is in the power switch or somewhere else that feeds power to the lower attachment.

Motor on the powermate keeps cutting in and out.

If your talking the motor on the beater bar, then chances are either when the beater bar was attached to the hose near where you hold it, it did not lock, and the connection is intermittent, or the cord has an internal break.

Vacuum won't come on

The switch in the hose maybe bad, motor problem, or some of these cannisters have a relay mounted by the motor, it may be bad.

Carpet function rollers don't turn

Most likely a broken belt. If the brush roll is turning freely, then check the belt.
