Can't get red eye reduction to work. When I hit the red eye reduction button in the menu, it goes to small photographs instead of the one I want to reduce the red eye in.

Reset the camera menu to factory defaults and set all custom functions back to 0. If it still continues, then it is probably a sign of an electronic problem with the circuit and it should be sent to Canon. The XS model is notorious for main circuit problems. Replacing the main circuit requires programming and only Canon has the software
Red eye reduction doesn't work that well on cameras. You would be better off importing your photos into a program like Picasa and fixing the red eyes there. Picasa's red eye removal is one of the best out there and very simple to use.
What you could also try is diffusing the flash somewhat. Put a piece of tissue paper over your flash is one way to do it. Or try bouncing the light from the flash off the ceiling with a piece of card (I've even used a piece of torn paper plate to do this)
I don't know whether this camera has red-eye reduction. It is likely to be found in the setup for the flash, or as a toggle for the flash setting. On some cameras, you toggle through the available flash settings until the icon (usually a lightening bolt) has an eye next to it.
Red eye reduction is not perfect even if the camera offers it. You get a much better solution by using a photo editing program in the computer to remove red eye from your shots. Many such programs have a function just for this that works almost automatically. You may have gotten a photo editing program with the camera, but there are many others downloadable for free on the net, try www.download.com.
The camera is in Red-eye Reduction mode. The preflashes are intended to get the subject's pupils to contract, reducing the red-eye look.
Press MENU to display the menu. Press right-arrow to select the toolbox icon (Setup). Press the arrow keys to select Red Eye Reduction, and turn it off.
Press Right on the cursor button (marked with the lightning bolt icon) to switch the flash setting. Your choices are AUTO, AUTO/Red-eye reduction, Forced ON, Forced ON/Red-eye reduction, Slow sync/Red-eye reduction, and Forced OFF.
To take photos with red eye reduction requires your flash to firerapidly before snapping the pic. Make sure camera is in record mode pres the 4 way switch with the lightning sign on it. The flash modes will pop up. select red eye flash.
To fix red-eye after a photo is taken. Bring up the photo in playback mode and press menu button. Red eye reduction should be available as one of the menu items. Otherwise, display the pic, press OK button in center and if you like the fixed picture then select yes to store it.
Hi The product you have given has Built-in flash with Auto, Forced on, Red-eye on, and forced off (Red-eye reduction On or Off). There is a 1 1/8" diameter lens with a built-in lens
cover that automatically opens and closes when the on/off button is
pressed. Above the lens is the viewfinder window, flash and tiny
(almost unnoticeable) microphone. There is also a small circle that has
three functions: the autofocus assist beam, red-eye reduction lamp,
self-timer lamp. A wrist strap comes with the camera and attaches
through a slot on the front of the camera near the side.
To the right of those buttons is the
four-way controller, used for menu navigation as well
as:
Up - Metering (Evaluative, center-weighted,
spot)
Down - Drive (Single-shot, continuous,
self-timer)
Left - Focus (Auto, macro, infinity)
Right - Flash (Auto w/redeye reduction,
auto, flash on w/redeye reduction, flash on, flash
off)
while in record mode, press the flash/up button repeatedly until you are in red-eye reduction mode. red-eye reduction mode should greatly reduce the problem when enabled. If this does not work, the software that came with your camera (and most photo editing applications) include a red eye reduction/removal filter.
Here is a link to the product manual:

It states that to turn on red-eye reduction mode (p.43), go to the Camera menu, then set the top setting (red-eye) to "on".
Even if you are unable to get this to work (or if you do get it to work, but are unhappy with the results), there is a really nice free proto organizer (www.preclick.com) that includes a red-eye removal tool that is really simple to use.
