Red ring of death or RRoD is a sign of "general hardware failure",Itisindicated by 3 red lights or 3 red rings near power button.Itoccurs, when GPU (graphics processing unit) becomes loose. GPUisfitted onmotherboard, when ever mother board heats up GPU becomelooseand greenlight turn into 3 flashing red light. The vibration ofsystemusuallyloose the soldering of the GPU this will freeze up yourxbox360.
You can fix it with this guide.
The 3 red lights is caused by the GPU and the CPU overheating and because of the heat they lose connection, all you need to do is stop the heat build up and you will be back up and running.
You can do this yourself or you can sned it in to get it fixed.
You need to
have the motherboard fixed, do to this you need to take the xbox360 apart then
reflow the board.
there is a
great 6part video guide on YouTube to view for free. 6 videos from the same
fellow, each video is a few mins long, and goes over everything for you.
http://www.youtube.com/user/ohiocitysales#p/u and its free unlike some eBook site.
I actually
used the same method to fix over 450 Xbox360 units with no problems at all,
barring a few (but i have done nearly 500 so you expect a few problems along
the way), you just need a few things though like a heat gun and some thermal
paste. sounds hard, but it's very easy once you start!
Hope this
helps in some way.
I should also mention that that the 3 red light issue is covered by Microsoft for 3 years from the date of purchase under there extended warranty for 3red light and 1 red light E74 errors. so if your unit is under 3 years old and you have not opened it, then give them a call for free and have your unit fixed for free.

You have the RROD (red ring of death). Luckily it is now covered by microsoft warranty so call them up and send it back to be fixed. Alternatively, if for some reason you have no warranty (bought it used, warranty expired) I have heard there is a method to try and fix it by wrapping the 360 in a towel and leaving it on for like 5 or 6 hours. Some people have had success, others just made it worse. You may want to google it to find better instructions as I have never tried it. The most common cause of the rrod is that it overheats and part of the motherboad between the gpu and the cpu warps and they lose connection. So somehow by blocking the vents with a towel and leaving it running it reconnects these joints. However I have heard that it is likely to get the problem again after trying this method, so just send it to microsoft if you can.

I CAN FIX IT! There are links that show you how to repair this issue yourself (but they are not very clear and every thing is very fragile inside the XBOX 360) or you can contact me via reply on here and we can discuss the issue further as I recently repaired my XBOX 360 with the same issues and it works better than when was brand new. It is a heat sync problem that has to be repaired by someone with indepth electronics knowledge. THERE ARE OTHER EASIER ISSUE TO REPAIR I JUST NEED MORE SPECIFICS AS TO PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED. try this link as well http://www.zimbio.com/Xbox+360/articles/332/One+Light+Two+Lights+Three+Lights+More
