I have a yamaha v463 av receiver. when i hook up my ew blu ray player through the HDMI in port, the screen is snowy/blips. when i connect the player directly to the TV, it is fine...but obviously i want the surround sound....
my directv is run through the 2nd HDMI port, and works fine.
any ideas about why the blippy/snowy picture with the blu ray? (i've checked cords, and even returned the blu ray player for a diff. model, thinking it was incompatible).

What port do you have the HDMI from you BD player into on the 510. If you have it on the DVD port then fiber optic will do you no good, the DVD HDMI only supports digital coax, the Video2 HDMI only accepts fiber optic, and there is an extra fiber optic for the Sat input. If your BD player does not have digital coax out, or if you dont want to buy another cable, just move the HDMI from DVD to Video2 on the 510. I am willing to bet you have the BD player plugged into the DVD HDMI port and the fiber optic cable from you BD player to the Video2 fiber input.

Thats because if you look in the owner's manual, it declares the fact that it will only broadcast sound from hdmi to monitor not speakers. For sound out of speakers need to connect additional audio cable.

Solved problem with Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver. My daughter had inadvertently changed the program to "Direct Stereo" mode which allows sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors so you can listen to 2-Channel PCM and Analog sources. Nothing to decode digital audio in this setting!

Do not use HDMI thru your receiver. Go directly from the Cable box to the TV. Connect coaxial digital or optical to your receiver. Your receiver uses HDMI version 1.1 or 1.2, which is riddled with issues. If you want to read about them, Google HDMI Problems and you can read for hours. Long of the short of it is; Don't pass HDMI thru your receiver, use the receiver for audio only. Hope this answers the question. Sorry for the bad news! I'm in the industry and have been dealing with these issues for a couple years now.
