Wiring diagram 3 way motion detector switch I want the motion detector to be in the hot line box, and I want a regular 3 way to turn the light on from the load box. So far I can only get the motion detector to turn the light on. The diagram that came with the motion detector switch shows the switch configuration opposite of what my situation dictates. Please help me figure out how to enable the regular 3 way to turn the light on as well. THanks!

    Thanks for your response.

It took me a little while to figure out why if I had three wires coming into the box I couldn't just use one of them to wire directly from the load wire at the motion detector to the line out wire running directly to the light, until I realized with an embarrassing "Ah Ha", that I was counting the same wire twice... Whoops.

Thanks for your response. I am sure others will find value in it because I saw others asking the same question and not getting the accurate answer.

    Thanks for the response.

It took me a while to reach this conclusion. I couldn't figure out why if I had three wires coming in I couldn't just use one of 'em to make the run from the motion detector load line to the line to the light, and use the others to run back and forth between the motion detector and the regular 3 way.... Till I realized with a brilliant "Ah Ha" that I was counting the same wire twice; I needed four conductors not three. (one line out to the light, one conductor to carry load from motion detector to line out, and two travelers) Connecting from the motion detector load out wire to the line to the light only left me one wire to make two trips.

So instead, since I don't really need the second location to do anything, I put a jumper on the two traveller poles, the line out to the light on the common pole, and the motion detector is the only way to turn the light on or off, and the three way switch just provides dimmer control...

I am sure others will find your answer helpful because I saw others asking the same question, and not getting accurate answers.

I could run a fourth conducting strand between the two switches and give the 3 way switching power, but like you said, that is a bit more work, and in this case, it is absolutely unnecessary. Because of the second switches location you almost can not manipulate it with out triggering the motion detector anyway.

Sorry, but you need one extra wire between the switches to wire "the opposite configuration" that you want :-(
That means going into the attic and pulling another cable :-( I can walk you through it if you are willing to do all that work.
The only other solution would be to purchase the commercial version of that motion switch, which would also require a sensor at _each_ switch location :-(

I'm glad things worked out for you. Yeah, trying to visualize all that isn't easy. I had to look at the manufacturer's wiring diagram, then make my own drawing showing the switches swapped to the "opposite configuration," then draw the connections and that's when one realizes that the extra wire is needed because the hot is now at the wrong end.

Happy New Year, and thanks for taking the time to provide feedback.

I want my motion securtiy light to acturally stay on all night. more after animals than people, can this be done?

What is the point of having a motion trigger on it then? Wire it direct to the switch or remove the sensing unit and turn it on at dusk and off at dawn using a timer.

Do you have a wiring diagram to wire a security motion detection light between 2 3-way switches so switches can be turned: (on-Motion)/(on- Completely) from 2 differemt locations?

One of the switches needs to be a 4-way then the PIR will act as any other switch. The downfall is if the lights are on and motion is sensed they will turn off.

My preference is to connect the contacts of the security device across the travelers of the three way circuit. The travelers are probably the red and black in the three conductor cable. When motion is detected the lights will turn on regardless of the settings of the three way switches then after timeout they will turn off. If they are turned on with one of the three way switches nothing will happen when the motion detector turns on except you cannot turn the lights off until the security device has turned off.

I hope this helps. The motion contacts need to be isolated from the motion detector power.

Load between 3 way switches and line entering switch box. Breaker trips when both switches in down position

Test your wires.
Somehow you've got a neutral wire, or ground wire, or shorted wire connected to one of the switches.
Without a wiring diagram, best place to start is identify hot wire from breaker.
There should be only 1 hot wire connected to the switches.
Disconnect the hot wire. Then test hot wire to each other wire and screw terminal. Tester will light up on neutral or ground fault. That will narrow down the suspects.

Hi my question is motion spot light has has two black wires one from each light and two white from each light and one red from the motion detecter which is connected to the black wires there are two wires...

The red wire from motion detector connects to both of the black wires from the lights. The black wire from the motion detector connects to the incoming black wire from the switch or source. The white wire from the motion detector connects to both of the white wires from the lights and to the incoming white wire from the switch or source (all white wires are under one wirenut).

I am trying wire a motion Senior its has 3 wires coming out the back red white black

To connect a separate motion detector to a light fixture (and assuming the fixture uses incandescent or the newer twisted florescent light bulbs), the RED wire from the detector is attached to the black ("hot") wire from the fixture; the WHITE wire from the detector is attached to the white wire from the power source; the BLACK wire from the detector is attached to the black ("hot") wire from the power source. Sometimes the white and black wires from the power source are mixed up, reversed. So it is best to check to determine which wire is actually "hot" (shows voltage in a meter between the wire and the ground wire or the metal box the power wires come from). In general, a colored wire (often black) in the power source, if wired properly according to accepted custom, will be "hot" and 120v in US. The white wire in the power source is called the "neutral" and should be neutral with the ground wire and/or the metal box. If there is another colored wire in the power source (often red) and if it is not taped with some black tape (to indicate it is really a black wire), then it too may be a 120v. hot wire, but it may also be an 120v. hot wire that is 120v opposite the other 120v wire. That is, one 120v wire is 120v+ and the other is 120v- The difference in voltage between these 120v wires + and - is, hence, 220v. If you see multiple colored wires, it is also a good idea to check the voltage between them to know if you are dealing with a power source that entails 220v. In short, you want to know what you are doing, obviously for personal safety, but also to accomplish what you want... to properly connect the motion detector.

I have installed a PR 180 at the top of the basement stars to turn on the light when someone enters, and a normal 3 way switch at the bottom. The idea was the lights come on when you step into the...

While there are many ways to wire 3-way switches, the most common way is to bring a 2-wire/with ground HOT and neutral cable (from circuit breaker or source) into one switch box and a 2-wire/with ground LOAD cable (to light) into the other switch box. Then a 3-wire/with ground cable is ran between both switch boxes.

The PR 180 _must_ be installed at the switch box the has the cable that goes to the LOAD. I suspect that you have the PR 180 installed in the switch box that contains the HOT feed.

Unfortunately, the solution is to install the PR 180 at the downstairs location and have the normal 3-way switch at the top.

Another solution would be to install a Leviton 1PP15-1L at the switch box that has the HOT feed and a Leviton 1PP0R-1L at the switch box the has the LOAD cable. This, of course will result in a sensor at each location.

Unfortunately you cannot use two PR180-1LA's for what you want to do. :-( There is only one correct installation:
One PR180-1LA needs to be installed at the switch box which contains the cable that goes to the light (load). That is a must. One then installs a regular 3-way switch at the switch box which contains the cable with the hot from the breaker (line or source).

If you reverse the sensor location you will need 4 wires between the switches, which is not usual practice, as the bare grounding wire is not permitted to carry current per National Electric Code rules.

If you want a sensor at both locations you need to install a IPP15-1L at the switch box that has the cable going to the light (load). One must then install a IPP0R-1L at the switch box that has the cable with hot from the breaker (line or source).
