Take it back to shop. You stated worked out of box then stopped working so assume brand new. Also contact tomtom support as it was a common problem with tom tom one and under guarantee they replaced mine.

Not sure which model year you have but check for a small reset button on bottom press and hold it with a paper clip or similar. Also try holding the power button for a minute to see if it reboots, try removing the memory card first. If it starts don't insert the memory card until the unit is off. If that still does not work click on the link below which will explain the reset in detail.

If you had the prongs backwards, you probably blew the input diode. I don't know of anywhere other than Tom Tom for service on these.

Go to change preference, screen7 Battery Saving Preferences and make sure Never turn off screen is selected. That should fix it

those need a good charging! if you have a mains adapter for it, give it a overnight charge! same problem happened to a friend of mine!

Charge it through the computer using your USB cable for a good 2 hours and try switching it on again. It happened to me and it seemed to work fine after that.

Try a pin in the 'reset' hole.
