I put my Canon SD780iS through the washing machine. The lens was extended when I found it. I did not try to turn it on. I removed the battery and memory card, removed the 5 small screws and opened the front and back to expose the insides. Over the next 2 days I dried it out completely with a hair dryer. When I put it back together, I too found that the lens retract cycle was messed up, and while the splashscreen came on, nothing else worked..

I tried your trick of holding the Function/Set button while turning it back on. The camera reset back to factory condition, and it works like a champ. No loss of pictures either! This is one heck of a tough little camera!

Hi,

On this camera a restart is achieved by holding the power button until you see it shut itself off and power back on again. Unfortunately a lens stuck error and won't retract is not uncommon on this camera and can be difficult to resolve without opening it to repair the lens mechanism.

The other thing to try if the restart does not work is to remove the battery let it sit for around an hour then put it back and see if that helps as a hard reset.

There is a report with some Canons that if you turn the camera on whilst pressing and holding the set button this may have the effect or resetting the lens mechanism. However this only seems to work with some Canon models but certainly worth a try.

Finally have a look at my FixYa Tip on this subject (link below) and you may find that one of these solutions will do the trick.

I have a canon powershot SD850 IS...it was dropped accidentaly and its not starting n says lens error restart camera...how to fix it??

Hi,

Very difficult to repair at home due to having to remove most of the camera insides to get to the lens mechanism. The lens then needs to be opened in a dust free enviroment and repaired. Your best bet is a local independent repair shop.

I have a canon powershot sx100 IS the lens is

Here is a site that discusses things you can try to fix this for free. They do a much better job than I could, and they let you know the risks and steps to take, in order. Try this first, you might get lucky- they say 50% of stuck lenses or lens errors can be fixed.

Don't worry, this is a huge problem with extendable lenses, due to their construction with small, plastic gears that are easy to break with a bump or fall, or obstruction while extending.

I dropped my camera in the sand and the lense won't close. When I turn it on it makes a buzzing sound and states ''Lense error, restart camera'' and then turns off.

The lens has probably got something in the retraction mechanism that is stopping it retracting. This can be something as simple as sand or grit or as a result of a drop or knock. In most cases the camera will need to be stripped apart to remove the lens assy before it can be repaired. This is best left to a professional camera repair shop.

Canon Powershot; "lense error restart camera" Cannot take pictures due to error. Lense seems to work OK mechanically on start up but has an internal issue causing error.

try these:-
  • connect it to pc and on it
  • vaccum the barrel of lens
  • changing mem. card and batt. for 2min.
  • shake it.
  • on and off in different positions
  • hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

Lens cover will not close

YES, BUT THAT IS A JOB THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE PROFESSIONALLY, DUE TO THE ALIGNMENT OF THE LENSES AND THE POWER DRIVE FEATURES. IF YOU GOOGLE CANON POWERSHOT A620 REPAIR SERVICE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET A PRICE QUOTE BEFORE YOU SEND THE CAMERA IN FOR REPAIR. IS IT JUST THE COVER THAT NEEDS REPLACED OR THE LENS? THE COVER MIGHT JUST NEED TO BE CLEANED GOOD WITH AIR TO START WORKING AGAIN? WORTH A TRY. IF I CAN HELP MORE, REPLY TO:

Lense error restart camera

A digital camera's lens is a very easy thing to have damaged. If the lens is bent some time you can force it in to the other direction and it will pop back into place. some times the gears get stripped and the lens then has to be replaced. I replace lenses all the time because of this issue. Hope this helps.

Canon sd 600

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:
