Well, well, well - perhaps all god things must come to an end after all unless someone has a solution :)
Sharp Carousel II mivrowave/convection oven (built in 1990), only replaced the fuse once is now making a fairly loud buzzing type noise, turntable rotates, food does not heat.
I am assuming this is the magnetron, my question is, can I change this myself and if so any and all tips/directions would be very helpful/critical to success.
Thank you,
Arlene
Hello, I just purchased a Sharp Carousell II convection microwave oven, also built in 1990, serial number 212806. I think the model number is R18244, but part of it is worn off. Can anyone tell me how to get a manual for it? I have never cooked with a convection oven before.
Thanks
The question is... Do you want to put money on a 18year MW, or put it towards a new one? I must admit I love the SHARP Combo MW Convection ovens. I own two. One is almost 25years old. The mechanical Timer Type, but they work great and I can maintain them with 30years ef exrerience. I am now retired.
It does sound like the Magnetronhas broken down, however it could be other things in the Secondary (High Voltage Side). The High Voltage Side is made up of the Secondary HV side of the High Voltage Transformer, A High Voltage Diode, a High Voltage Capacitor, and the Magnetron. The High Voltage Side is DANGEROUS, and CAUTION should be taken to protect yourself against EXTREME HIGH VOLTAGE. unplug from power and DISCHARGE High Voltage Capaciton to frame GROUND before touching anything!!!!
A Magnetron (part only) can cost from $60-$120 according to type and supplier. The Magnetron Part Number is usually on the bottom of The Magnetron. The Part Number sometimes is also listed on the Schematic Diagram inside the Cover.
Because your unit is a Combination Convection/Microwave Oven you need to inspect the Foam Air Duct after the cover is removed. The Foam Air Duct directs air flow when Oven is in the Convection Mode. It is Foam Rubber and will deteriorate with age. It is important that it is in good shape for correct air flow. Especially when in the Convection Mode. If there are Gaps in the Foam Duct, the Convection Oven will not reach and hold Temperature Setting.

As it sounds dangerous, I haven't tried it. Maybe I will try the magnetron and see if that works first, if it doesn't then I would have to take it somewhere. I would be willing to invest less than $100.00 as when I looked for a new one I didn't find any that compared well with the one I have :)
