I have a Kenmore flat top electric range model 790.9656 and when I turned on my front Power Element I heard a loud pop noise and now it doesn't heat. We called for a service call and the price to have them come to the house is over $100 and that doesn't include parts. Otherwise it was close to $300 with parts and a one year warranty on the work. Is this something I could fix myself, if I knew what was actually wrong?
Assuming the other other elements work....
Write down the entire model number and call a local Sears parts store if there is one near you. They should give you the option of having the parts shipped or picking it up.
To change the element:
Unplug/turn power off to your range first.
Look under the front lip you should see between 2-4 screws. Remove the screws and then the glasstop will lift up. You might need some help to hold it up while you remove the front support bracket.
Once you have that bracket removed from the glasstop, you can change the bad element.
Testimonial: "thanks for the info - I feel confident in giving this fix a try!!"
Once you have the range top up and secured (I used a piece of wood to hold in up) make notes about the wire coloring scheme used to connect the lead wires to the various terminals on the element. The element Sears sent me (Nov 2012) had 2 male terminators of a larger size than the original element which meant I had to replace the smaller female terminals with larger ones in order to finish reconnecting the six lead wires back to the male terminals on the new element.

Yes, all the other elements still work. So it sounds like the element to you? I will definitely try this one myself!
