Scanner will not scan to certain programs

I'm using Windows Vista, and a Canon MP210 scanner. Both are working fine.

I'm trying to scan to something OTHER than OmniPage (?) or Photoshop Elements, both of which freeze when I try to scan things to them.
I've tried using the "Aquire..."/"From Scanner or Camera..." button in other programs (Paint, Paint.NET, Arcsoft Photostudio). The Aquire window comes up, but when I hit Preview, it comes up like it's going to scan, then stops, and nothing gets scanned. I hit the Scan button in the program, and the same thing happens.

So, my question, how can I either 1. add a program to the scan list when I hit the Scan button on the printer, or 2. get the printer to scan when a program tells it to.
We just bought this printer yesterday. It'd be horrible to have to take it back so soon.

@ Pianofun: I've tried that already to no avail.
And also, side question, it's printing pictures very lightly when i print from the Preview thing on the computer, but not when I print from PhotoStudio.

    Integration?

I'm using the MP Navigator that came with the printer to try and scan. I hit the button on the scanner, the program pops up, i hit Scan, and nothing happens. It says that it can't communicate with the printer.

this must be a vista problem which is why I am really starting to hate vista. with vista the drivers no longer get downloaded automatically like XP. I can print but not scan with the MP 210. I also have am MP470 and that one works fine. If anybody has a solution please HELP.

Try reinstallying the printer driver, but first remove the printer program.  Then, reinstall everything and try it again.  Unplug and plug the printer in.

ok...from what I gathered in your statements, you have reinstalled the printer drvier as well as reset your printer, correct?

If so, Canon has a MP Navigator you use to open the scanner and gives you options of the type of document, big green scan button, and then how you would like your document after scanning, (edit, convert, print or save)...This software works marvelously with the Canon MP.  If this does not work, we'll have to take a look at the integration of Vista and the Canon MP210.

I have this problem on my Canon MP210 Scanner that doesn't work! I even re-installed the driver, but nothing worked but the copier works. That mean that the hardware works correctly.

First try a different data cable and a different port. If you use a USB hub or print server, try a direct connection. Check that a known working device can connect to the computer. Check the device manager and power saving settings. What message do you see in the Devices and Printers window (Printers and Faxes for Win XP) for the MP210? What error messages do you for printing and scanning?

For Windows 7, Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager. Look for a triangle with a yellow exclamation point or a red x at the bottom of the list at Universal Serial Bus Controllers. You can try updating the drivers for the USB controller or uninstalling them and then rebooting the machine. (The computer should find and install new drivers automatically. However, you should also check in Windows Update for them (check for new updates - optional and important).) With some computers this could be the result of static at the USB ports. Disconnect all of the external devices and the power cord (computer and the outlet). For a laptop, also remove the battery. Then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the battery back in (if applicable) and reconnect all of your cables.

For the power savings settings, again for Windows 7, right click on the desktop (anywhere there are no icons or running programs). Select Personalize. Then click on Screen Saver then choose Change Plan Settings. Next click on Change Plan Settings (for the active plan). Then click on Advanced Plan Settings. Scroll down to USB selective suspend.

Did you install the Canon driver, full software or the OS driver? Can you print any documents? (Sometimes the scanner will not respond but the printer still works.) If you have documents in the print spooler, you may need to stop and restart the spooler. (One way to do this is to launch the Command Prompt window (run as administrator for Vista or Windows 7). Start > All Programs > Accessories > right click on Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Type "net stop spooler" without the quotes followed by enter. On the next line, type "net start spooler" again without the quotes and press enter. Now restart the computer.

If the printer works, but the scan buttons do not. If you connected the USB cable before installing the Canon driver, you have a generic driver that may not run the scanner. Uninstall the driver, unplug the data cable and then reboot the computer. Then install the full featured software (if available) from Canon http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp210?selectedName=Specifications#DriversAndSoftware . Next try to scan from the computer. You need to set up the full software with destinations for the scanner buttons and the monitoring program must be running. (If you use the basic driver, the scan buttons will not work. In Windows XP, Vista or 7, you can acquire scans with Paint. File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan. Vista comes with Photo Gallery that can also do this (it can be downloaded for XP and Win7). Vista and Windows 7 also include Windows Fax and Scan to acquire scans.

If the unit still fails to work at the current computer, try connecting it to another (with known working USB ports). If it still fails, then the USB port has failed in the all-in-one. This could be another static issue. With the printer on, unplug the cables (data and power from the printer, outlet and the computer). Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to a minute. If this doesn't help, if the printer is under warranty ask Canon to repair it.

I hope this helps.

I have a Windows Vista computer and a Canon MP210 copier/scanner and have a document in printer to scan and can not transfer to my computer, I can't find disk and put information from disks years ago on a...

First, if you connected the data cable to the computer, uninstall the current driver and then unplug the data cable. (This is for USB cables.) To uninstall, open the Devices and Printers control panel (click start and then find the line on the right hand column). Right click on the unit and click on Remove Device.

Then navigate to http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp210#DriversAndSoftware and select your version of Vista (32- or 64-bit). Download the software/drivers. The MP Navigator is the full software and will let you launch scans from the unit once you set it up. The first driver in the list is just the basic driver and will only work with scans initiated by the computer.

Always launch scans from the computer first. There are buttons in the MP Navigator that match those on the all-in-one. The default settings for these need to be set up (see the help in the program) and include resolution and location to save files. Then when the monitor program is running, you will get the MP Navigator coming up with a button press.

Vista can scan without the MP Navigator with three included programs: Paint (File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan), Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan) and Photo Gallery. Howevver, if you do not install the Canon driver, you will probably get a printer driver only from the OS.

If the problems persist, try a new USB cable and a different port. If you use a USB hub or print server, try a direct connection. Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and can fail when the printer works.

I hope this helps.

(if the copy function works, then the above information should help. If the scanner itself is not moving, check for a transport lock and that it is lighting up as it should. In the last case, the unit may need service.)

I dont have the on screen manuals in order to use my Canon Mp210 scanner The printer and scanner are all in one. I put a photo or document in the scanner and turn it on, it seems to be on and ok, except I...

To get the manual go here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp210#BrochuresAndManuals .

Drivers and software for supported OS versions are available here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp210#DriversAndSoftware . If you want the scanner to work when you press the buttons on the unit, you will need the MP Navigator.

If you connected the USB cable and got a generic driver, uninstall that driver and then disconnect the USB cable before installing the software from the above site. This generic driver usually only runs the printer.

There is a monitor program that listens for button presses on the all-in-one. This must be running to scan from the unit. However, the software must be set up with destinations and default settings before the MP Navigator will work with those buttons. Thus you should first launch the software from the computer and learn the resolution and other details to set as your defaults. Place documents face down on the glass or face up in an Automatic Document Feeder.

If you have some versions of Windows, you can acquire scans if the basic Canon driver is installed without the full Canon software. For XP, Vista and Win7, Paint will work - File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan. Vista and Win7 both have Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan). Vista includes Photo Gallery which also imports from the scanner. (For Win7 this is part of the Windows Live free download but isn't preinstalled.)

I hope this helps.

Cannon 4400F Scanner

I had the same problem with about 1 out of every 16 slides when I first got the scanner. The only way I found around it was to rearrange the slides and try again. I started scanning through the ScanGear software instead of Canon Toolbox, and haven't had that problem since. I've scanned about 6,000 slides and negatives so far.

Communication problem with a MP210 Canon Pixma

Yes! No WIA, no scanning! It means Windows Image Aquisition is not turned on... Not only will the scanner not work but also other Imaging devices like cameras. The best way to find out will be to try and scan from Microsoft Paint. Go to Start, all programs, accessories then look for paint. When paint opens, click file then from scanners or cameras. Try to scan, if it scans then WIA is ok.
It means is the scanner software that was not installed correctly so uninstall reinstall just the scanner software! If Paint does not scan, then its your computer's Operating system (winxp) at fault. Make sure WIA is started, or better try to restart that service (in control panel, administrative tools, services, look for Windows Image Aquisition, restart the service).

Scanner not working on Canon MP 210

As for the drivers, go to the following link and then click on the "Drivers and Downloads" tab, then choose your operating system. It should then give you the drivers under the "Driver" heading right below the operating system drop-down box. The software is there as well.

Canon Pixma MX700 Scanner Problem

I was having the same problem, and thanks to the person who posted solution number two which simply highlighted the fact that the apparently software that came with the Canon Pixma MX700 unit is not compatible with Window Vista.

The reason I was confused is because the printer was working perfectly fine across the network, but when I went to scan my computer would tell me that it can't communicate with the scanner. I'm thinking ... "well since you can communicate with the printer, you should be able to communicate with the scanner, after all, they're the same device!"

As a workaround, I used a third party program to do the scan (in this case, Photoshop) and everything worked fine. If you have Photoshop, just go to file > import to start the scan. If you don't have Photoshop, I would think whatever program you are using for image editing may have the same functionality.

Hope that helps,
Brian

CanoScan Vs. Windows Vista

Tom, your solution is incorrect. I have just got my Canoscan working fine with Vista, simply using Canon's official XP drivers and unpacking them in XP compatibility mode. Is working fine with just a bit of experimentation. (You need the Canon toolbox software too, all of which is available from canon.com)
