Similar problem except the fax noise starts after the phone conversation is already going. I have DSL on my phone line. Do others who are experiencing this problem also have DSL? Answering this may help narrow down the possible causes. I'm putting on more DSL filters (I did have one already) to see if that helps.

  • Zack2 Feb 19, 2008

I have the same problem. I have called Canon support to help walk me through the set-ups in case I missed something. They have tried twice to help with no real solution. I still get the fax noise over a phone call!

I have DSL and an answering machine on the same line.

  • antk Feb 24, 2008

We have the same problem with canon MX310. We are on TEL PRIORITY MODE but still get cut off ( + fax sound for outside caller) after about a minute

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2008

I have the same problem. The Fax ring tone comes when a call comes in if the machine is on at all and I have to hang up with the caller and turn the Canon off in order to establish phone connection.

  • newbiz Feb 29, 2008

I am experiencing the same issue and I also have a DSL line.

  • SteveBNZ Mar 09, 2008

Same problem. Have DSL on the line. Was using an answer machine, but unplugged it and same issue with the Fax (sometimes) cutting in over an established incoming phone call. Called Canon, but they had no solution. Machine is set to Tel Priority.

Note: The default setting is [ON].

If [Remote RX] is set to [ON], a window will appear displaying the current REMOTE RX ID.

Yes, I have the same problem. I tried to change the Remote RX ID, or turn it off, but without solution. I read that a solution is change a parameter in service mode. How I can do? Thanks.

  • plotzcrw Aug 15, 2008

I too have a problem with FAX noise during established phone conversations.  My MX310 is set to telephone priority mode.  The problem does not occur with every phone call and sometimes is early in the conversation sometimes after several minutes.

  • debbiedudu Sep 01, 2008

Really wish that I had've discovered this website prior to purchasing my PIXMA MX310 - I've also found that my voice calls are being interrupted by the fax - which automatically goes into action within the first 60 seconds - I get cut off (silence) my end, and the other person gets a fax tone in their ear! I had my machine set to Telephone Priority - I tried some of the solutions offered by the other people using this site, including changing the number of rings (the maximium allowable is 5 rings - not enough time for me to answer the phone, sorry) and changing the Remote ID (no success either) and changing the RX and Man/Auto settings (no good either), until finally I thought I would try tricking the machine, by using the Receive Mode called "Network Switch". For my situation, this has worked a charm. As I receive very few faxes, on the occassion when I answer the phone and am greeted with a fax tone, I simply go into the office and press the Black (Start) button. The only downside is that I'm not able to receive faxes outside of business hours because I'm not there to push the start button. I have been told that this "Network Switch" mode is compatible with Telstra's Fax Stream Duet service, where the machine doesn't switch over until it actually detects a fax signal. Fax Stream Duet costs $6 per month - I think it would be great value for money to have this service set up if would like to receive faxes whilst not at home/in the office, rather than have all your calls interrupted by Canon's crappy Telephone Priority settings. Hope this helps someone.

how do i change the settings so the fax will ring only once or twice or with a different ring tone

All, I too had this problem (not on EVERY call, but enough to be really annoying!). Anyway, I read the postings and tried the RX ID change and was going to try changing the receive mode to network switch - but couldn't figure out how to do so. So, I opened up the manual and BAM right there on p31 was (I hope) the answer. Contrary to the manual's specific instructions, I had connected the MX310 to my phone line via a 'splitter' in the wall phone jack - 1 side to my printer, 1 to my office phone. (In my defense, this was the arrangement I used for my previous printer, so when it crapped out, I just plugged the new one in where the old one was.) Anyway, I removed the splitter and just plugged the MX310 in the wall and moved my office phone to the 'phone' jack in the back of the MX310. I *believe* this is going to do the trick!

Solution by spud:
the figure 1.030 on the PTT report is the firmware version. if you upgrade to version 1.040 this figure will appear on the top of the report page! try the new firmware.

I have no idea but I think the easiest solution should be to get a distinctive ring for fax and for phone on your line. I beleive the machine is then able to automatically decide whether to pick up or allow the phone line to receive message based on the ring. in that case, I beleive the fax number of rings should be lower than the phone and the priority should be fax. Now...this is based on common sense and not on any knowledge of this product. So for othose frustrated ones.... please forgive me. I am just beginning to troubleshoot mine, so i may be joining your ranks soon. Ciao

Ok, I think I have found a solution.

I have read all the posts on the net and with no success I decided to go againts the grain.

After I set all data to default:

Set printer to "Fax priority mode" and set Ring count up to enough that you have time to pick up.

It rings the amount of rings you set it to and then makes a beep sound in the caller's side. It then continues to ring on the printer and asks you to press stop if you want to use handset.

I am still testing this.

CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME ADVICE ON THE POSTING DATED APRIL 14, 2008

A

Hey Everyone I have one phone line for the MX310 and it used for phone and fax.
I want the machine to detect if its a fax or telephone line, the answer machine picks up and is set to 4 rings..
well if i follow everyone's advice and set the fax ringer to 5 rings, it seems as though the fax machine isn't picking up the fax if it is a fax being sent.  there isn't that ringer sound usually heard from Mx310 for receipt of a fax???
And the voice mail is a service provided by my telephone company so it seems like the machine just thinks things are taken care of??
When in fact I want the machine function fax to kick in after the voice mail is done.

Hey

i've contacted canon because of the problem that the fax interrupts every incomming phone call. this solution worked for me
First of all you need to turn of rx remote sometimes it works by only changing the number, i decided to shut it off. second i switched man/auto switch on so that the fax can decide if its a phone call or a fax. if you work with an answering machine you set the number of rings of the fax one time higher so that your anwering machine can pick up the phone. You should set the fax to tel priority. after that i still had a problem which was due to the telephone that was hooked up at the fax. It disturped everything because the caller heard a sizzling sound and sometimes a beeping (line is used) solved by another phone.
the rest of the settings are standard.

recommandation:canon USA support site: solves a lot of problems

Now the fax is working very well it doesn't interrupt, manually and automatically receives fax and my anwering machine works too

hope that i helped you

Have had same problem, ie. incoming calls cutting out (with fax tone) after approx 15 seconds - with Tel Priority mode set.

I think I've finally managed to fix it after much frustration....

The Ring Tones number on the fax machine needs to be set to something higher than the number of rings on the answering machine.

For example, I've set answering machine to 4 rings before picking up, and Ring Tones on the Canon MX310 to 5 rings. (Menu, Fax Settings, Rx Settings, Ring Count).

Hope that helps!

I posted on Feb 22, 2008 that I had installed a replacement unit and that all is well. WRONG! The fax again answered the phone today and it seems that I'm experiencing the same problem as before. Sorry for giving you hope in correcting the problem.

I contacted Canon and spoke to three different tech guys. Finally they said that they would replace my unit with a refurbished unit that had been updated. The tech perosn said that the software must have a "glitch". New unit installed for one week and so far no problems.

Be sure to set the "Receive Mode Setting" under Fax Settings to Tel Priority Mode. In this mode, the Canon won't answer the phone.

I'm still troubleshooting why the fax seems to speak up during an outgoing phone call.

  • Rufrantis Feb 22, 2008

Actually, misspeak. Latest problem was on an incoming call where fax spoke up with Tel Priority Mode selected. Sorry folks...

Hi Guy's, Now I run a small PC repair business here in Australia now what I am about to say may or may not help in your country but here in Australia it does.

Ok my Clients Mx310 cuts out when he is on the phone (voice) after I tried all possible trouble shooting I bit the bullet and rang Canon (Australia)

Canon informed me that there is a phoneware issue and needs to be upgraded. This is how you can tell weather you need the upgrade.

1. Push Scan button then #
2. put in this code 9768 #

Now this will generate a print report, let it printout .
The page will have a heading PTT PARAMETER.

On the far left margin you will have a figure in my case it was 1.030 now that is the frequency for the line so the fax knows what it is doing etc etc.

The figure (Frequency) should be 1.040 or greater, You have to take the unit to a canon Tech so they can do the upgrade via the units USB port, and no as far as i can tell there is no other way round it ie firmware etc.
For me who lives in a Rural town my canon dealer is 120 Km away.

Now just to add the Canon MX700 should have a figure of 1.080 or greater.

I hope this makes sense and I hope it helps as I said should in Australia as for other Countries really unsure.

Regards,
Spud

Stopped receiving faxes ten days ago. Can still send faxes. Senders say it just rings and rings. Calling the fax by phone confirms many rings, then fax belltones. What do you think is the problem?

go to menu option and choose the option fax and set the parameter like auto receive or manual set the ring auto answer mode after certain ring. If it is in auto receiving mode it will receive the fax after the ring which you set.

Peoplel are sending me very imp. faxes and idk how to recive it..

If your printer has FAX capabilities. Good way to tell is if you have a phone number pad on the front of your printer.

You must have this connected to a phone line for it to receive a fax.
Setup the fax application through your installation CD that came with the Printer/fax machine. Often you set the fax machine to pick up after so many rings. This allows you to leave the printer/fax machine on and gives you time to answer BEFORE the fax machine does. If uncle Bob or Aunt Susie should call to say Hi!

Basically what is happening:
You turn on the Printer/Fax machine it sits idle waiting for a phone call.
Someone now sends you a fax using your phone number.
YOUR printer/fax machine is sitting there listening for the phone to ring.
Lets say you have your printer/fax machine setup to answer after 5 rings.
After 5 rings, your Printer/fax machine will pick up and listen for signal tones from the the other machine. If it gets these, it will "handshake" and send a confirmation fax tone. Then the data will be transferred and printed out on your machine or held in a fax program for you to print or save later.

It is critical that you do not pickup the phone too early or the two fax machines trying to communicate will fail.
If you do this, you will hear an awful squeal and a serious of tones.
You can often hang up quickly and the two machines will transmit again the handshake signals and resume business as usual.

Short answer:
Two fax modems are talking to each other over your phone line to transmit data.

Good luck!
and hope this is helpful.

MY INTERNET GOES DOWN EVERY TIME THE FAX MX310 RINGS

There are some good suggestions here. Check out the solution and follow the steps. The reason dsl seems to be being dropped is the noise in teh line, and as far as I can tell this is a very common problem. Try these suggestions out but you may want to just purchase a better fax machine.

To recieve fax on brother

Press the 'RECEIVE MODE' button on the right side of the control panel, its next to the large 'FAX START' button. Here are your options :

Select Receive Mode
MANUAL
—You must answer all calls yourself. If you hear fax tones, press
Fax Start
to begin receiving the fax, then hang up. You can use this mode with
Distinctive Ringing. (See
Distinctive Ring
, page 8-1.)
FAX ONLY
—The fax machine automatically answers every call as a fax call. You
cannot receive a voice call, but you can dial out and make a voice call.
FAX/TEL
—The fax machine automatically answers every call. If the call is a fax, it
prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with a double-ring (ring-ring),
different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select
this setting, you’ll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the
following pages). If you have extension phones on the same line as the fax machine,
set Ring Delay to 4. (See
For FAX/TEL Mode Only
, page 5-5.)
TAD:ANSWER MACH.
—This is the only setting in which you can use an external
answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to your fax
machine, and answers every call. Once the TAD answers, the fax machine listens for
fax tones. If it detects fax tones, it prints the fax.
The TAD setting works
only
with an external telephone answering device (TAD); it
does not work with telephone company Voice Mail. Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time
do
not
work in this setting.
