It's "dying" -- replace it. If it is an "external" casing, with an "internal" DVD-writer inside, you could open the casing, remove the "dead" drive, buy a new drive, and install it into the case.

The Rewriter is a USB connected accessory and should therefore be connected automatically, and no drivers will be necessary with later versions of Windows. The drive came with a cable with 2 USB plugs on one end. Not all USB ports carry enough power to run a rewriter, in which case it is necessary to plug both into USB ports to get sufficient power for the rewriter to run properly.
Later versions of Windows allow you to burn files, music etc to Cds, DVDs, but if you want a separate piece of software for this, try here: Free Burning Studio freeware download Free software to burn rip audio CD...

Do you have a drivers disk for the DVD player that has windows 7 drivers on it or is that version of windows 64 bit and the is no driver for that DVD player.
I have same DVD writer and I am facing the same problem. During R&D for such failure on google I came to know there are two different Laser Diodes for CD and DVD. CD read write is working for me. I think DVD r-w laser has some problems. I am currently looking for options to get the new laser diode. As soon I replace the diode and see my DVD writer working. I will upload the video to replace the diode for you all.
What is the software for?
If you want to record CDs and DVDs then you need Nero or Sonic record now.
windowsXP has a built in CD recording program butnot for DVDs
Windows Vista can record CDs and DVDs but neither operating systems program can copy CDs.
You definitely should call LG--your new gaget isn't working, and it is under warranty. Or try going to their website to see if they have any software upgrades--sounds like you have a bummer, and perhaps a reinstall from their website will do the trick.
