Just to be sure we are talking the same unit I have included the link to the user manual for SX-255R

Suggestions
1. have you tried to press the Muting button on the remote unit.
(item 11 remote unit diagram)? does it make any diffrence - what if the button is stuck?
2. Have you tried to play the Tuner radio - what happens then? do you still get Muting.
3. You mentioned something about speaker wire coming out.
I understand that Pioneer receivers shut off if any of the speakers is faulty, ie, correct impedance is not showing at the speaker input point.
Usually the newer units give an "overload" message. It is possible this could be happening and the SX-255R gives the "muting" message instead. Some people have reported very minute shorts where strands of the speaker wire touch the body and it causes "overload".
One way to check is to remove speakers wires one by one and see if the "muting" goes away. Then you can check the offending speaker if that is what is happening.
Good luck

Hi
Thanks for using FixYa. Please try
to hard reset the unit by unplugging it from the power socket for more than
four hours. If still the issue persists, check the on-screen-menu which should
have a selection for SAP, stereo and mono audio. Try these to switch these on
one by one. If you are listening via external amp/speakers you may be connected
to the fixed output jacks. Try a
variable audio out. Also please check the following---
Please check that the volume
control is set to minimum. Turn the volume control toward the right.
Speaker connecting wires are
disconnected from speaker terminals. Connect wires to terminals securely.
One or both of the input cords are
disconnected. Connect input cords securely.
Tape monitor button is in the on
position. Press the button to off position.
Speaker’s buttons are in the off
position. Press the button to on position.
Please do accept the solution if
the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.
Thanks

I believe the issue is with the transistors inside as pre-amps do not have a relay. Any muting that is done is done using transistors. You'll need to get this checked by a qualified repair tech.

If the remote will still not resolve the issue then as I said earlier the issue is with the transistors inside as pre-amps do not have a relay. Any muting that is done is done using transistors. You'll need to get this checked by a qualified repair tech.

You have to select any available 'tape loop' .
Receiver Tape Out (Rec) - to INPUT
Receiver Tape In (Play) - from OUTPUT 1 or 2
A tape deck would hang off the back of the EQ using ITS tape loop.

I'm sorry to report the solutions you suggested did not work. I would like to point out there is no on-screen menu available for SAP/MONO, etc. I do believe this problem started when an external speaker was moved and the speaker wire came out. I have re-secured the wire and completed the hard shut-down. The screen still says "MUTING." It will say "CD" for three or four seconds after pushing the CD button, then it will revert to MUTING. Is there anything else I can try?
I appreciate the feedback but I haven't used the remote in years. If I can find it, I will try to locate a MUTE button. The receiver still says muting whether I have the TUNER selected or a single speaker connected. Any other thoughts?
