My camera cannot focus

Hi I am unable to focus my Rebel XT. Which ever way the lens is turned the view is out of focus. I have own the camera for around 7 months and has been fine up untill this point. I have also tried with alternative lens and result is the same, always out of focus. Can you help?

Camera will find a focus on auto focus, but through the viewfinder the image I see is still out of focus. In manual it is impossible to focus.

I have the same sort of problem - the camera is a couple of years old and it seems like photos are coming out less sharp than they did when I bought the camera. It is not the viewfinder, as the photos themselves (results) are out of focus - I cannot find any place in the photo that it seems to have focused on sharply.

The autofocus is working (at something). It's hit and miss with manual focus too.

Can these things be recalibrated and if so, how much and how do I get this done.

There is a little button with +<->- label that is used to 'focus' the viewfinder only. It is used to allow near / far sighted people to use the see thru viewfinder w/o glasses. It is located right next to the see-thru viewfinder.

Are both the lens and camera set to autofocus?

You will definitely have to return the camera. The autofocus sensor is most probably at fault.

My Canon EOS Rebel XT 350d will not autofocus.

Sound like a broken ribbon cable in the lens. Needs to be replaced but get a quote as it may be cheaper to replace the lens with a secondhand one.

There is a minimal focusing distance for all lenses. If you move closer to the subject than that distance then the camera won't focus on it. Check you lens manual for minimal focusing distance. It is 11 inches for Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM, for example.

Dealy on snapping pictures

Check your focus modes to see if you are using one that is different to usual. When a DSLR has no focus lock it won't take a picture. Also verify that the focus motor in the lens is working ok. Google 'lens focus tests' and see what you can come up with.

Blurred subject in middle of photo

I own Rebel XT and Canon 50mm f1.8 MKII lens with plastic mount and noticed many pictures with missed focus, either front or back focusing. Meaning objects slight forward or below the intended subject is in focus. I've sent my body and the lens to Canon for evaluation and thet adjusted my focus sensors on the body. I still have problems and there are many threads related to focusing on this camera with 50mm f1.8 that the sensors on this camera do not do so well with fast lens and prone to missed focus.
Test your camera's focusing ability with a book or magazine where you focus on just one specific line and see if it is truly in focus when you review the picture.

Canon Rbl XT out of focus in viewfndr when shutter half way down

Hello,
It's possible that the reason the "pictures turn out fairly good" is that your f-stop is set high enough that even though the image isn't properly focused, you have enough depth-of-field to bring your subject into "near focus". Does your lens try to focus back and forth when you half-press the shutter? If not, double check that the lens is in autofocus and not manual focus. You can also try cleaning the contacts between the lens and camera. Take the lens off, and then one-at-a-time clean the contacts on both the lens and the camera, using a clean pencil eraser. Gently rub the contacts. Be sure to hold the item upside down so that the eraser debris falls on to the table, not into the camera body or lens!

If none of this helps the autofocus may have become damaged and you need to have the lens and camera looked at by Canon Repair.
