I am trying to hook up my ps3 to an HDTV and receiver/dvd player so I get full 5.1 surround sound. I have my ps3 hooked up to my HDTV via an HDMI cable and my receiver/dvd player hooked up to the HDTV via an HDMI cable. Do I need to have the ps3 connected directly to the receiver for the surround sound to work or since the ps3 is hooked to the tv and the receiver is hooked to the tv will that work. Or will I need to connect the ps3 optical audio out to the receiver's optical audio in? Remember I am trying to get full surround sound. I understand that I can use the normal av cables and get sound. But that is for stereo sound. As far as I know the only way to get 5.1 surround sound from the ps3 is through an HDMI or optical audio line. And seeing as though my receiver doesn't have an HDMI input (and I want the ps3 HDMI connected directly to the HDTV) my other option, it seems, is the optical audio connected directly to the receiver. This is hypothetical, I do not own the receiver as of yet. I am trying to figure it out before I purchase it.
You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

If you would like both video and audio to output through the HDMI cord, make sure to go into the PS3's video settings and select HDMI output there, and also go into the audio output settings and select HDMI. This should make the audio come out of the TV's speakers.
If you're using separate speakers, such as a surround sound system, use a different audio output (such as the red and white component cords) and plug those directly into your sound system.
Most digital inputs are assignable, so go to set-up menu on your receiver and make sure the optical port (opt1 , opt2, etc.) is assigned to the input (vcr, aux, etc.) that you want switch to to listen to the PS3. You may also need to go into the PS3 settings menu and turn the optical to output the Dolby Digital signal. You have to do this with most DVD players, too.
If your receiver has another digital audio input available to connect to, such as a coaxial or optical input, you can use either of those for the PS3. Another option is to use one of the composite audio inputs, but however, your surround mode for that type of input will not be Dolby Digital, DTS or any of the high definition surround sound formats. You will instead be able to get one of the Dolby ProLogic formats, or one of the various surround modes that are proprietary to the receiver model by it's digital signal processor...depending on which you choose.
you have to go to the set up menu and let the receiver know that you are inputting dvd audio to the digital in. (assigning). that way, when you switch the receiver to dvd, it will look for audio from the digital input. your receiver manual will guide you through that set-up. if that does not work, the fiber optic cable could be bad. this is more common than people would expect. another option is to just rca cables to the receiver from the ps3. there is an adapter that lets you do that. good luck mark
Here's one solution, if you have an audio output from your tv, you can go from the audio output on your tv to the audio input on your receiver that way anything that is playing on your tv for example, playstation 3, dvd player etc. Anything playing on your tv will have audio on your onkyo home theater system. The other thing I would try if you want to hook ps3 directly to receiver is go to your connection settings on your ps3 menu and change your connection method to digital optical cable.
