I trust the door is sealed correctly. If heat is escaping this could be the problem. If the seal is okay the only thing it could be is the oven thermostat controller. It sounds like it is faulty and needs replacing.
I can go back to 1974-5 for mine, that's when my original Landlord bought the place and it still has the same GE P7 as when the complex was new...and it still works.
IF YOUR HEATING ELEMENT IS GETTING ORANGE HOT, AND CYCLING, I WOULD SUSPECT THE THERMOSTAT TO BE THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. YOU MAY FIND IT HARD TO FIND ONE THOUGH DUE TO ITS AGE.
elements are not made by the manufacturer and generic in design
to that end you go to electrical wholesalers and taking you old elements along , see if there is a like one that fits
depending on where you are there are retailers that sell elements for just about everything and e-bay has a range of elements
you have to make sure of several things
1-- the end fittings are the same
2-- the wattage is the same and the shape is the same and --the dimensions are the same
all of this you can get by reading the description on the sellers page
