Problems with IP address

I have installed a wrt54g for my lap top and it works great but there is one problem. I have cable internet using a Scientific atlantic modem. My tower is old and has no ethernet connection so it is using a USB connection from the modem. The router is using the ethernet connection. When I estabilish my wireless connection for my laptop the IP address changes so my tower cant get online. How do I stop this and keep both units working???

Hi,

Possible three (3) solutions:
1. Purchase and install a PCI LAN card (NIC) inside your "old tower". Should not be that difficult using any available PCI slot. Most would be auto detect/install by Windows (XP) or should come with a driver CD;
2. Use a USB to Ethernet adapter/converter; and/or
3. Use static IP address for the tower Same IP add (+1 on the last digit, same Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS (if any). Should you need additional information on this method you need to post back details of your modem (brand/model, normally in a sticker underneath) so we can determine if it will allow simultaneous connection on USB & LAN.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Im tryig to piggyback my wrt54g router to another part of the house. I have a cable coming from my linksys e1000 n router which is my main router. When i plug the cable into the 54g i can access the router...

What is the IP address of the E1000 router ?
If the IP address of E1000 router is 192.168.1.1, Then change the IP address of WRT54G router to 192.168.1.2. Connect the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of E1000 router to the Ethernet port of WRT54G router ( port 1 of E1000 to port 1 of WRT54g). Disable the DHCP server.

You can do it in a different way also.
If the IP address of E1000 is 192.168.1.1. then change the IP address of the WRT54g to 192.168.2.1. Do not disable the DHCP server of the WRT54G. Connect the E1000 to the Internet port of WRT54G.

Desk top/ethernet to linksys router not recognizing.

First connect that desktop to linksys with ethernet cable.
then set ip property to network adapter .
Set ip address ,subnet mask and gateway ip to ip property.
Set ip address as the ip of network like if router ip is 192.168.1.1 so set ip like 192.168.1.15
set subnet mask as same as your other computer.
Set default gatway ip as your router ip.
Then you can connect internet.
Let me know if you need more assistance.

Thanks.

Wrt54g seem to have lost ip address

Unplug your router and plug it back in.  A power cycle seems to fix 99% of this type of problem.

Cannot install D-Link router

1. check your wireless adapter TCP/IP settings if its set into "Obtain as IP address Automatically".
2. if the settings is set as Automatic and your not getting IP address then select "Use the following IP Address"
3. use IP address followed to your router address like if192.168.0.1 in router type 192.168.0.2 or192.168.0.3 just check the next address IP in your network.
4. after typing subnet IP will automatically set
5. type the router IP address as your default gateway
6. click OK to save your new settings

Hope this will help

Installation broadband router linksys WRT54G v5

In your internet explorer address bar, type in the ip address of 192.168.1.1 and see if it asks you for a password.

If that isn't it, try 192.168.1.245.

The default password is admin. No username.

Also, go to www.linksys.com and they have free chat support and can walk you through this issue.

No internet connection

You didn't specify if you're using DSL or Cable internet.

With DSL, keep in mind the software1.gif on the PC is what "dials out" to the ISP with your name / password, and you MUST set the name and password in the router. Otherwise, ONLY the computer that has the software installed (verizon, etc) will be able to connect.

If you're using a cable connection, you don't have to do this, however, most newer Linksys routers come with a 'setup' disk, which MUST be used regardless of connection type.
