When I turn on the camera it goes off then on again without me doing anything - checked batteries I have just recharged them, but they are 4 years old, maybe this is the problem.

Try switching on by holding the button for about 1 minute .WITHOUT ANY BATTERIES IN CAMERA. Then replace batteries and switch on normally. (this should have done a camera "reset"). Worked for me on my camera!
1. Make sure you will install a new or fully charged battery/batteries into your camera. Please use lithium batteries Ni-Mh or rechargeable Batteries (2000 M.Amp or higher).
2. Clean the battery contacts.
a. Remove the battery/batteries and the memory card from your camera, then wipe the battery contacts with a soft, clean cloth.
b. Reinstall the battery/batteries into your camera
Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera
which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the
camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with
a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush,
steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen
into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of
the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears
the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, the camera may have
a problem that requires professional repair.
I have the same problem too. It's just started happening. The camera is about 3 years old. I've cleaned the battery contact points with an eraser and ensured there's contact. All seems fine. I only get about 5 shots out of brand new AA batteries, then a black screen with message 'change the batteries'. Can anyone help?
Carry spare alkaline batteries - just in case...
Does the same symptom happen with alkaline batteries?
Lithium Ion batteries are 1.2volts
Alkaline are are 1.5volts
Rechargeable Alkaline batteries are 1.5volts
Perhaps you should switch to Rechargeable Alkaline batteries if the symptom goes away when you use alkaline batts...
I have the exact same camera almost a year too. It is a total "swinka" on batteries. About 10-15 shots on super ni-cads, and quits without warning.
A pair of Energizer 7X gave me near 500 shots. Much cheaper but still ...
So 4 months ago I bought a charger and 2 rechargeables. Charge one while using the other one. I may get 70-90 shots per charge on these lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, without flash.
Testing the batteries without a load doesn't really tell you anything. What's the reading? Should be well over 4 volts when fully charged. Mine show 4.2V
The symptoms sound like a failing battery. The camera is shutting down due to insufficient power during startup checks. How old is your battery? Rechargeables really aren't meant to last more than a year or two.
Now I realize that Sony batteries are outrageously expensive. But thankfully there are generic alternatives such as:
I had the same problem a year after I bought my camera. I returned it to Nikon and they fixed it and returned it. The problem reoccurred 3 times and each times Nikon repaired it free of charge. Then after a year it went again and, when I returned it to Nikon they sent me a new camera. Within a couple of months the new camera had the same problem. I have since resolved it with new batteries! The original coolpix rechargeable batteries do not seem to recharge properly so when I put ordinary AA batteries in it suddenly worked. Good luck.
A quick test would be to purchase a set of Duracell Ultra Digital batteries and try them. They won?t last for very long; however, if they make the red light go away then you problem is either the batteries you are using or the charger. More often than not its going to be the batteries so we?ll start there:
Check your batteries, you should be using Nickel metal hydride (Ni-ME) that are rated at 1450 (I use 2500) mAh or better.
If the batteries are more than one year and you?ve used them a lot then its likely the batteries just aren?t holding a charge anymore. Purchase a new set or borrow a working set from a friend. Charge them in your charger and try in your camera, if the red LED goes away use the batteries till they need charging again. Charge them in your charger and if the red LED stays off then the batteries were the problem.
If the red LED returns then try charging your batteries in someone else?s working NiME charger. Put them in your camera and if the red LED goes away then your charger is the fault.
