It will play a DVD but the icon in My Computer changes from the DVD designation to "CD ROM Drive" as soon as a new disc is inserted. Other software fails to recognize as well such as light scribe. When the drive is empty it recognizes as a LS drive but as soon as the media is inserted it states "no light scribe drives present". I have deleted some other software but this did not seem to come on with new installations and right after I installed studio I did burn a 45 minute movie with no problem. both DVD writers do the same thing

when i put a blank dvd in the dvd burner it says on the screen, 'do you want to burn a CD? not a dvd which is what is in the drive. If I click on yes it says no disk detected please put a cd in the drive and click OK. I cant even put music files on to a dvd disk. I cant put any type of file on a dvd disk. It keeps saying it is a CD drive, not a DVD drive. please help.
I have the same problem with an IO magic DVD RW drive (external USB), using XP SP 3.
I'm almost positive it's not a firmware problem (mine is up to date) or a software issue.
Windows plays DVDs and CDs fine, and recognizes the drive as DVD RW right until I insert a blank DVD, at which point it appears as a CD drive in stead of DVD RW. Neither windows nor InfraRecorder can write to a blank DVD.
I've had intermittent hanging problems with this drive on other XP computers and I'm guessing it's a Windows problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
Same problem with dual NEC DVD RW burners on a Dell 4600i using XPsp3
