Samsung SP47W3HFX blue flickering curved line

I have a Samsung SP47W3HFX tv which is a rear projection and my picture has gone wrong. I have read numerous bloggs on the issue of convergence problems, but i am not sure my problem applys to this.
My problem is Blue curved flickering lines on the screen( I have tried auto focus and manual convergence neither of these have helped) If you take the back off and look into the coloured guns the red and green gun are perfect but the blue gun is flickering and the lines are curved...!! Is my problem a lamp fault, projector problem, convergence problem or something else??

SOURCE: Pincushion Picture on a big TV screen!!!

The set has 3 IC's(one for each color)strictly dedicated for the aligment of each color,if one them does not align is because is going bad or is already bad becuase picture can not be adjusted, the IC's can be identify because they are mounted on a heat sink and have the markings STK--- ---,they are all the same and need to be replaced with an exact replacement. If you are familiar with tv service you can replace them, sometimes the new ones need to be aligned from the service menu, you will need the service manual, soldering and unsoldering will be involved,If you are not too familiar be safe and seek the assistance of a servicer.

SOURCE: sony rear projection convergence

This is a convergence problem that is either bad connections on the convergence ICs or defective ICs. IF you can solder and feel comfortable working inside the set, you can fiox this yourself. Let me know if you wish to attempt the repair and I'll post more details and instructions.

SOURCE: convergence Issues

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

If the lines are slightly curved and stationary on about 2/3 of the screen its either the Blue CRT or the Blue CRT drive board which is having the problem.

Samsung Rear Projection 47" TV goes into stand by on start up

I am sorry to disappoint you but a TV problem can only be fixed by electronic technician. If you want to do it yourself, you would have to learn electronics. Start by learning basic electronic, and then read a book on how to fix televisions. Without knowledge in electronics, you won't be able to understand a book on fixing a TV. I have been fixing TV since 1998, and I started after dropping out of electronic engineering class. I learned most about electronics on my own, and you can too.

I guess it's missing blue. Even if you see the blue crt working it's not enough and focalised. replace the coolant in it and also check if you have some coolant leak on the crt pcb.

BLUE DOUBLE VISION

It sounds like you may have a loose solder connection either in the convergence circuit or the pincushion correction circuit. If you can't visually locate it, you may need a service manual and test equipment to track it down. I doubt that changing parts will be the cure if it is an intermittent problem.
