I received this monitor from my friend after it died on her thinking i could fix it. It won't turn on at all, no lights at all. I took at apart and put it back together. When you plug in the power cable u can hear something going on inside for just a second. I think one time I got a blue indicator light for just a second. One day my dad was doing electrical on the same circuit that the broken monitor was plugged into. I believe he disconnected the neutral wire to disconnect something. When he put it back the monitor came on. It worked for a day. I turned it off over night and the next day the light was orange until i tried turning on my pc when it just died again.
I have the exact same problem. Just like Ptepe, I also found the 680uf/25v and 1000uf/16v capacitors in positions c203 and c204 on the Power Supply PCB to be bulging on the top. I considered replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors on the board, but decided to just try the visibly effected ones first. Please make note that the instructions provided below are to be followed at your own risk! Soldering on a delicate printed circuit board will be required for this repair and the board can be permanently damaged if done incorrectly, not to mention the potential for bodily harm! If you have warranty, you will obviously want to pursue that avenue first.
1) Remove the monitor's base by removing the plastic cover over the connectors and then the one over the base's bracket and unscrewing the four screws. While you're in the area, there are two screws, one on either side of the bracket, that must be removed. They are in the recessed wells.
2) Turn the monitor upside down so the narrow edge is facing you. You will see at either end of the bottom edge an arrow pointing toward a slot. Side a small flat head screwdriver under the cover in the direction of the arrow. With the screwdriver still inserted, unclip the bezel by pulling the plastic in the direction of the arrow. Repeat on the other side and carefully pry the rest of the clip points loose all the way around the screen, while carefully holding pressure against the screen so it doesn't fall out, and the plastic bezel will come off. Be sure to unscrew the switch assembly from the bottom. There are two screws.
3) Lay the monitor face-down on a soft, clean surface like a folded blanket. There will be five screws on the back with the fifth one in the center. Remove all of these screws and very gently lift the plastic cover away, making sure to keep the screen from falling out abruptly.
4) With the back of the screen and electronics exposed, you will see a sheet metal case with a few wires routing from it to three points on the monitor and the switch assembly. To the left you will see a metal cover held in by one small screw on the narrow edge. Remove this small screw and partially remove any tape that may be securing it. You may replace the tape later if it loses adhesion. Remove it, gently lifting the metal case where it overlaps the cover.
5) Next, partially remove any tape that is securing the wiring harnesses (it can be completely removed if you are planning to replace it). This will give the metal case a sufficient range of motion to allow you to lift it up on the right edge and expose the large harness routed to the top of the screen. This harness has a bit of tape covering the connector at which it terminates, and the tape must be lifted to expose the connector. Gently remove the connector straight out of the socket. Avoid diagonal movement as much as possible.
6) With the large connector removed, the metal case can now be flipped over, with the screen remaining flat, to expose the circuit boards it houses. On the left is the processor board, on the right (the one with the big capacitors) is the power supply board. First, remove the black plastic cover over the power supply board. This may require some flexing of the plastic and/or clips. Be sure to make sure any wires attached to it are detached. Next remove the small metal slide panels covering the upper and lower wiring harness connectors on the case (the ones routed to the upper and lower parts of the monitor on the left side). With the two upper and two lower connectors exposed, note their positions and disconnect them.
7) Now the case is completely disconnected from the monitor. Carefully remove the connector from the board on the right that connects to the board on the left. Unscrew the four bolts holding in the power supply board (the lower left screw is larger than the others). Carefully lift the board out, angling the side with the power connector downward. Be very careful not to touch components on the circuit board.
8) By comparison, you may clearly see which capacitors are bulging on the top. These are the ones you want to replace. If mine and Ptepe's experiences are consistent with yours, you will see two out of a cluster of six larger capacitors with bulging tops (the cluster is on the opposite side of the really big capacitor and the two common capacitors are surrounded by the others). While you have the board out anyway, check for continuity through the fuse with a Digital Multimeter and check for any visible defects such as burn marks or melted solder points.
9) Very carefully desolder the effected capacitors. Verify their rating (most likely one 680uf/25v and one 1000uf/16v capacitor) and order them. If you'd like to replace all of the medium capacitors, it couldn't hurt. You can even replace the really big one if you want, but make sure you measure everything...including height, width and terminal spacing. For the ones that I used, though, they're 10mm x 20mm radial aluminum electrolytic capacitors with 5mm terminal spacing and 105C temperature rating.
10) Solder in the new capacitors, clip the excess pin lengths and reassemble in reverse order. It may take some finesse to put everything back the way you found it, but if you paid attention while you were taking it apart, it shouldn't be too hard (and taking pictures with your camera phone along the way can help too).
This solution worked for me. If it wasn't for shipping, I would have paid $1.18 for the entire repair. If you can find it, the power board can be replaced as an assembly, too, if you screw it up. :) Good luck!
i tried the steps that you gave above and my monitor is still blinking on and off. i changed all 6 capacitors (5x 680uf/25v and 1x 1000uf/16v), but the blinking will not go away. anyone else having issues? should i replace the really big capacitor, too?
I replaced every medium capacitor and the big one! all in all 7 capacitors. The problem remains the same. The screen turns on for a split second showing the logo and than off over and over.

Had same monitor that didn't power up and found two capacitors blown on power suppl,y board. 680uf/25v & 1000uf/16v. The caps will be bulged on top or and have a burnt hole.
This problem is showing when the main PCB of the monitor failed. Not to worry you have warrenty, contact the LG service provider in your area. They will change the full package assembly or PCB. check this link to get the service center info

When it have this kind of error is a problem of the powerboard.
Anyway you must open it and look at the all capacitors and if are them inflated, if them are inflated must change them.
But can be a problem with inverters... control the transistors - MOSFET on the powerboard.

Bought one of these monitors for $5 at a yard sale. It exhibited the "classic" symptoms of the blown capacitors. After opening up and changing out the caps at C203 & C204 (which cost about $3), it worked great!! I ended up spending a total of $8 on the monitor.

Thanks for the extra effort you made to provide a step-by-step instructions... that gave me the confidence take that thing apart. I ordered the parts for c203 and c204 in advance. Turns out those capacitors were slightly bulged at the end... so I replaced them.

This worked form. Having the power board out and quote requested for a replacement, I noticed capacitors c204 and c205 both 1000uf @ 16V swollen. (The indentations or X marks on the tops of the caps were bulged out. I found high temp relacements online. purchased 2 high temps and 2 standard mini electrolytics to insure I had caps small enough to fit on the board. The high temp choice worked fine.
Hats off to TTOSdanny above Solution #3 for a job well done.. No hiccups at all. 1.5 to 2 hours total time digital photos along the way a must.

I also have a similar problem with my monitor. I purchased it about 8 months ago from bestbuy and it has worked flawless til last night. The screen shut itself off like its stuck in powersave mode. I can turn it off then back on and it works but it only stays on for not even a full second before going black again. Anyone know if this is a common problem with the LG monitors? Any quick or easy fixes for this? I have hooked up 2 other monitors to my PC to make sure its not a problem with my pc or software. This monitor just refuses to stay on.

Shut HP computer and L1932TQ monitor off for three days while I was out of town. After returning, everything powered up but the monitor. It was working fine before I left. Have tried messing with the switch to no avail. Looking for the reciept to see if it might still be under warrenty but I doubt it.
I have what sounds like a very similar problem. When I cracked open my L1932TQ-BF monitor, I also saw that the 680 uF/25 V and 1000 uF/16 V caps were bulged at the top. Warming up the soldering iron right now.
I'm a MacBook user. I put my computer to sleep, left the monitor on, as always and this morning is was dead. I've checked the cables over and over again, no signs of life. I have no clue what happened or what to do. The monitor is only a year old. Help :)
I opened it up again and the capacitors that people have mentioned are slightly bulging, it normally I wouldn't be concerned about it. The monitor now spends most it's time sitting in the corner of my basement, but every once in a while I try and see if it works, and occasionally it will fire up for about a day, and turn off as soon as the computer goes on standby.
If I can find some replacement capacitors it's give it a shot and let everyone know how it works.
Same problem, fortunately the solution at the bottom of this page is correct. I contacted LG Customer Service via their 800 number, and in less than 5 minutes had made arrangements for their very easy "3-year Swapout" guarantee. Brand new monitor on the way, very little hassle, requiring only the serial number and date of purchase. 18 months is NOT a good life span for what this monitor cost, but I'll give LG credit for recognizing that and replacing it so easily.
I have just experienced the same issue with my LG196WTQ-BF 19" monitor. I used the information found here and called LG. They were very accomodating and I now have a new monitor on the way. Thank you for such a great resource and an easy solution.

I have the same problem. I went to turn on my computer and the monitor light went from yellow to off and the monitor stopped working. I got in touch with LG and they are having me ship it to a repair center and they are fixing it free of charge. They will email me instructions on what to do step by step. I followed frankb3913's instructions posted on Feb 03, 2010 this morning (March 2012) - quite amazing to see that the first posting was made in Jan 2008 and some people are still experiencing the same problem (i.e. it tells you how much time apart a failure can occur). It worked perfectly - I replaced capacitors c203 and c204. The only observation I would make is that it was not 100% clear for me that these were the capacitors that needed to be replaced - i.e. they were bulged at the top but it was a subtle difference from the others. I made a call not to replace the other ones - but if the monitor stops to turn-on again, I will replace all the others. Tanks a lot everyone for the comments here - it would be such a waste to through away a perfect monitor because two capacitors (cost of less than $2) were defective.
