The crank pulley should have a mark that is approx 12 o clock with an arrow on the block. Both cams should have marks,'I' for the rear cam and E for the front, and the dowel pins (in the end of each cam)AND the marks on the cam pullies will be 12 o clock with the back cover. Be SURE you TORQUE the crankshaft bolt to 120 ft lbs.

What needs to b done if a 1.6L suzuki engine was accidentally cranked one short/quick turn while the timing belt ra's removed? ?? Haynes book only mentions NOT to turn engine w/belt off, but says NOTHING...

wOW NO YEAR STATED, 89-99> n o caar stated either,
so I guess G16a or G16b engine.... why must i guess.... lots of 1.6 by suzuki made.....
nothing, its free running, most G16s are.
cant speak for all 8 cams sold world wide, but stock USA
its free running. why not put the crank at TDC #1 firing
and turn cam by hand and feel, (reality) look ma, no hitting....

that warning is just Haynes (junk book) stating what is printed
on all real SUZ. OEM FSM books, it states this.
http://www.fixkick.com/t-belt/interference.jpg

and is a worldly warning, on all engine they sell world wide all 56 engines sold.

most G16 are free running SOHC , usually are and rare DOHC.
most authorities, all that ive seen and seen most all mimic
the above factory warning, but what else can they do..
they read it and its CLEAR , no?

now your question, sure it dont say what to do
after all they dont know where you left the cam,

if super paranoid, (been there)
we do this,
put crank TDC, mark, (fires every 180 degrees it does)
the turn pulley to 90degrees, this puts all pistons 1/2 up.
now drop the head on to block with , cam cog with E mark at 12pm.
this is #4 firing.
now back the crank up CCW 90%
now #4 is firing.

easy huh> ?
note how the G16 has 2 heads, and are done DIFFERENTLY.
http://www.fixkick.com/t-belt/tbelt-index.html#Tbelt-main

if not paranoid?
put crank to TDC mark, 0deg
put cam cog to E mark up(16v). or pimple mark up(8v) 12pm
there is a 12pm mark on top back of cam cog
this is #4 firing, an is where all G16s are timed. (ALL)
end story.
there are false marks ,fully documented in link for 4 engines.
(they changed marks 4 times)

How to set timing when you relesh tensioner and it changes the alignment postion of pullies 2000 ford ranger 2.5 l

Here is the trick. Align marks. Put the timing belt on the crank shaft pulley first, and after on the overhead cam pulley. Release tensioner and rotate the crank shaft till the timing belt makes two full circles. Try to align marks, you will be at least one tooth off. Align the crank shaft on the mark, and find out how many teeth you are off at the cam shaft pulley. Count the teeth. Remove the timing belt from cam shaft pulley only. Move cam shaft pulley in reverse according to the number of teeth you counted. Make sure the crank shaft pulley is on the mark. Mount the belt at cam shaft pulley.Rotate the belt two circles and check the marks. Repeate this procedure til after releasing the tensioner, and rotating the timing belt two full circles, the mars will be align.

Changed the water pump on my 1997 passport & now the timing is off.

I assume you are talking about valve timing not igntion timing. If that is the case your water pump maybe run by the timing belt. If it is you would need to completely disassemble the timing cover and set the number one cylinder to TDC (top dead center) on the Compression stroke not the exhaust stroke. Once you do that line the timing marks up on cam gears with marks on the side of the head. Then install a new timing belt and tensioner. It is a good idea to always change the pump and belt together. I would suggest buying a manual for your specific vehicle for specific torque specs and exact locations of components and procedures.

I need to know the timing marks for a 2002 honda civic 1.7 litre engine

There are 4 marks on the crank pulley. When standing on the driver side of the car looking down on the pulley, the mark farthest to the right is the mark for TDC (Top Dead Center). The three marks on the left are for the spark timing. Of these three the mark in the center should align with the arrows/triangles on the timing belt cover when the engine is running and a timing light is shining on the crank pulley. The outer two marks represent Honda's tolerances for the ignition timing. As you look at the cam pulley the correct mark is at 7 o'clock with the two other marks at 3 & 9 o'clock positions. make sure you have correc timing, honda have "O" tolerance when it come to piston and the valves meets. or stop by any auto part store they should have Hane's auto repair manuel for 20.00 buck, worth all the money with proper instruction including picture, great investment to have for the future repair. spend little money to make sure you do the right job. good luck!!

Valve timing off no compression.. timming belt has slipped I am trying to replace the belt but i want to make sure that the valves are in the right order since the belt was missing numerous teeth... the...

Just have your crank shaft on the mark, and have #1 cylinder valves both closed, or, in the up position. (compression stroke) After you put the belt on, turn the engine over with a wrench, two complete revolutions. The timing marks should be exactly in the same place. If they aren't, you are out a tooth or two, and will have to try again. It should start up where it is, if you haven't moved the distributor.

What is the timing marks for a 2000 kia sportage?

the timing marks are as follows... if you are not able to see the picture the intake cam gear will line up with the mating mark on the rear cover .... the "I" needs to be straight up... the exhaust cam the E needs to be straight up. the crankshaft mark is a nothch in the rear of the crank gear which needs to line up with a pointer on the front of the aluminum oil pump housing. the keyway on the crank needs to be vertical. the marks on the rear cover are dimples in the cover. this is an interferance engine DO NOT ROTATE CRANK OR CAMS WITH BELT OFF. IF YOU HAVE BROKEN THE TIMING BELT DAMAGE TO ENGINE HAS ALREADY OCCURED AND YOU WILL NEED A VALVE JOB!!!! there is no exception on this engine. if you have tried to crank it over and the belt is broken the head is no good!

Timing marks on crank 99 passat

Do you have a 1.8T or the V6?

On the 1.8T, there is not timing mark on the crank. The mark is on the harmonic balancer. The corresponding mark is on the plastic cover for the timing belt, so to get TDC, you must first install the lower timing belt cover and then install the harmonic balancer.

Looking at the manual for the V6, it appears that it is the same. The marks are on the timing belt cover and harmonic balancer.

Timing engine

I had a 2.4 L engine in a caravan and replace the water pump that was controlled by the timing belt.
I was having the same problem, I called my bother in law to help. The crank shaft has to stay perfectly timing on the low end. The cam shaft marks are set exactly one half of a tooth apart. So when looking at it, The left side cam gear mark is a half a tooth higher then the right side. Then you have to try and slip on the belt . That is the easy part. When letting go of the timing belt tensioner the marks should line up perfectly across from each other. You have to take off the belt again and make sure you keep correct tension on the crank shaft so the mark is not moving when you are putting on the belt. There is a web site call Alldata.com. The web site cost a few dollars but it willl give you a detail instructions on how to time the engine with pictures to guide you. This is the same web site the pro's use.

I hope this has been helpful.

Oh, by the way you are lucky because the engine is not an interferrence type , so you can not damage the valves at least. Since you know the oil pump is out of time , check all the spark plugs again , they are probably oil soaked .
