When I place my shaver in the base the auto select modes for cleaning status will not light up. It will also not charge in the base. The light indicating the status of the cleaning cartridge is on, so I know there is power to the base. If I push down on the shaver in the base the lights will flash briefly and a clicking noise is heard then nothing. What is the problem?
All you have to do is take the base apart. Turn it upside down, and there are two plastic clips on the rear portion of the base. Press them in with a key or screwdriver and wiggle the base a bit to remove the inner portion from the outer shell. Make sure you unplug the unit and remove the cleaning cartridge before doing this. Once it is apart, place a small wedge underneath the portion of the electric contact that sticks out to touch the shaver, and press the back of that portion out so that it slightly bends the contact strip and makes it stick out a little further. Then remove the wedge and put the base back together. It will work again, as the contacts can now protrude to touch the shaver and run the cleaning and charging cycle.
Thank you for this information. One of the contacts had somehow managed to get pushed back far enough to no longer connect to the shaver when installed. The only way to really correct it was to take the base apart, as you suggested. It does take some time to extract the inner portion, even after pressing the release tabs. It's in there very tight. But careful pressure without going too far (the mechanism is fragile enough to break) manages to get it free. It's too bad the contact strips can't be easily removed. It appears that they are held in by a one-way tab. Anyway, bending the contact strip as you suggested seemed to do the trick. It's not perfect, but it should hold as long as you don't put any undue pressure on the contact point. If I have to do it again, I'm using epoxy glue to secure the contact strip.

The problem seems to be with the "memory" on the device. If you remove the internal battery from the unit for 2-3mins (might be a smaller amount of time) and replace, the device goes right to "intensive" and starts the clean cycle.
Here's some steps:
Hope this helps whoever tries it. It did for me.
Mine was not charging in the stand nor cleaning. Did what you said. Worked like a charm. Thank you. Saved me upwards of $200.
I dropped mine about 2 years ago and it never turned back on. I tried your steps and whadya ya know..it works! Unfortunatley I metal piece fell out and I do not know where it goes. Any ideas?
awesome ..worked for me as well..thx

Give up on Braun, they might appear to be a German brand but the quality has gone in the krapper.
My screws RUST in the shaver, this is the THIRD braun that is fucked up in communicating with its base or it quits (different models) ...
imply put, the MBA weenies instead of the German Engineering folks are in charge of the company and that is the end of another good brand.
Me ... i am so dsgusted, I went out and bought a first quality set of straight razors and am now getting the best shaves of my life.
Kiss my face shaving goo, high quality straght razor, oiled and strapped well, hot towel on face to soften the face hair, and wow, it is soo smooth and soo nice ... makes the electrc look lke junk ... better yet, no changing, no failing, and I can do anywhere, (except on a bouncing rutted road as I drive)
Spent over 800$ in the last decade on electric shavers, enough is enough.
Back to the cold steel and a good shave again ...
First-unplug from current, second remove cleaning cartridge, third spray Kroil penetrating oil making sure oil goes behind metal contact points, allow twenty four hrs for penetrating oil to function then repeat every three months for no problem service. This has worked for me six plus years, yes Kroil brand oil is expensive, however, this oil achieves desired results.
I actually bought a new power cable for mine so I could just forget about the dodgy base, but before it was delivered I realised you can just pull the power plug out of the cleaning base itself and plug it directly into the shaver... Easy to know if it's the shaver or base's fault at least!
I let the shaver charge on the cable directly for a few mins, took the cleaning cartridge out of the base and replaced its power cable. Flashing red light for Cartridge- OK good, replace the cartridge. Shaver back in the base, large elastic band to stop the thing popping back up (lol another Braun problem) and it automatically selected Clean once it had contact.
Hope this maybe helps avoid taking the shaver apart for some :)
You need to Unscrew the 4 torque screws and separate the top from the bottom.after it give cleaning it. remove the battery for some mints.close it and then try again, i hope it ll be working.
I have had numerous of these Braun shavers, and only occasionally have had any problems period, and if you work with the charging base to get it to reset at times, you will probably get it to work, after some diligent care.
All things need some help after a while of constant use, just like your car needs to be serviced. All the oil and dirt around the shaver needs to be cleaned well, to keep it working it's best.
These shavers are still the best for the money.
My base will clean my shaver , but after doing so wont reset itself. So it just keeps doing the intensive cleaning every time I put it in the base. Also the base will not charge the shaver. I have to plug the cord directly into the shaver I punched it a couple times and now it seems to charge again, Still havn't tested to see if the cleaning cycle resets itself or not..

Razor will not clean itself in the base - it just sits there doing nothing!
Same problem. Wouldn't work for months, then yesterday, Bam! Worked. Today. Nada.
SAme problem - can't charge in base and have to plug directly into razor - can't run clean cycle either - tried "fiddling" and once was able to get base to recognize presence of razor, but not again since -- any solutions? or does Braun sell just "base" replacement?
Same problem. Base suddenly stopped working after 1 year.
Same problem. Base suddenly stopped cleaning/charging after 1 year service.
the charge works, but not the cleaning cycle. I have new cleaning fluid cartridge, but no cleaning takes place, and the status light for any type of clean status does not light up. Is there a reset button?
I'm having the exact same problem. I fiddled with the razor in the base and got it to recognize the razor. the next day when I took it out the razor was very hot. Doesn't seem right at all.
No cleaning lights and no cleaning takes place. No charging lights. Blue light on top comes on, so it's making contact I figure. Turned it on/off, cleaned the cleaning chamber. Foil replaced in last 4 weeks. Replaced cleaner fluid. No change.
Exactly the same problem. I tried a second base, same thing, so this is apparently a problem with the shaver itself not communicating with the base. I've had it repaired once already, worked for about 2 more months, failed again.
Similar problem. Had shaver for 6 months. Am careful with shaver - never dropped or anything close. Place shave into holder after every shave. No animals, kids, or anything else near it. The problem: the light showing connection is made stopped coming on two weeks ago. Looks to me that the contacts on the back of the shaver are supposed to electrically connect to two metal foils inside the holder, one of which appears to have the metal surface scraped off, perhaps hence no connection. My impression is that Braun is using substandard/shoddy connections. But if I have this problem, then lots of others should have it also. ??
Maybe this is built-in defect. My shaver which is now a little over a year old, was working fine yesterday but now will not light up any of the cleaning lights, just the status of the cleaning fluid. If anybody discovers a cure, please let us know.
Exactly the same problem. Cleaning unit just won't light up
Same problem. If I jiggle it around the lights come on, but when I release the shaver they usually go out again. Not a cheap razor either. Purchased at Costco.
Exactly the same problem. Cleaning unit just won't light up
Same problem, the shaver will charge directly from the power adapter, but not from the cleaning base. The cleaning base does have power because the level lights are on. It looks the base does not recognized the shaver.
I'm on the third cleaning base for my 8985. They are obviously defective. DON'T buy it!!! Same problem. Place the shaver in the base and the lights stop lighting up and it won't clean. Seems like it takes it about a month or so, then it stops working. Braun has been good about replacing the base, but seems like a band-aid. Same problems with all the bases.
