If cursor is a checkerboard rectangle that means the memory is full. Memory must be cleared or at least some space freed.
Press [2nd] [MEM][7:Reset][1:All Ram][Reset].
Press [CLEAR] to erase Ram cleared message.

If some third-party program or game is stuck in memory, it should be kicked out of memory.

Since you shot down my answer, I guess that I am no longer sure why your calculator is acting strangely on its own. Maybe If I could talk with it.

You do not say if you get any error message.
Try to reset the calculator Press [2nd][+] to open memory management.
Press [7][RESET] followed by [1:All RAM] [2:Reset]
Then open the Y= editor and to the right of Y1= type in [X,T,theta,n] and press [ENTER]. You will see the straight line y=x.
Please report back what you get.

My calculator wont turn on. Even though i put new batteries in correctly. How can I turn it on? Nothing happens when I press the ON button.

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible. Does it?

I can't get any keys to work on the calculator

Having received no response in over a month, I assume the reset solved the problem.

My TI 86 is 6 years old and I have taken careof it well.

Try pressing (lightly) on the bottom border below the screen. If there is no change, try the top. If there is still no change, the power for your LCD may have become disconnected or shorted. There are external displays for these calculators intended for overhead projectors. If your school has one, you could try hooking it up to make sure the calculator itself still works.

In either case, it would be better to purchase a new calculator.

Good Luck!

My TI-84 Plus calculator won't work. It won't switch off by itself. When the batteries are reinserted, it says that all RAM has been cleared. When i press the 'ON' button again, the screen clears. but...

The Ram cleared message is normal after you change batteries. When you see this message you press the CLEAR button to erase it. You do not press the ON button again because the calculator is already ON. If you want to turn calculator OFF you press [2nd][ON] (OFF).

On certain calculators, pressing the ON button when calculator is already ON is interpreted as INTERRUPT the current command.

Won't turn on

Most likely nothing is broken at all. TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Black screen

Try 2nd Down Arrow. Your contrast may be turned up too high. This can appear to happen with new batteries.
