My Acer laptop's speakers are not working but when I plug in a headphone the sounds are normal..Wondering whats wrong? Is it the sound card?

this happen to me too, i had to send it back to acer under warrenty and they replaced the headphone jack :) some of them are having issues

plz check the speaker with other computer if the speaker is ok then the problem is with your sound card.

If you get sound from both sides of the headphones when you plug it into the same jack the speakers normally plug into all you need to do is replace the speakers. If you mean you plug the headphones into the cd drive that's nothing special. You could have a bad sound card, bad connection in the jack, or bad speakers.

try to uninstall the sound driver and install the actual one from here http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_4720.html

if you are able to hear normally from the speakers and not from the headphones possible reasons could be:
the audio is muted or very low
there is a mute switch on the headphone that is turned on
the headphone is not firmly plugged in or is in the wrong site eg microphone

ok..that's helpful..the sound card, so to speak, is embedded on motherboard on these units, so you'll need to replace that entirely(not simple, but not out of the realm of possibility).

try to open up your keyboard and try to clean some part of of your keyboard maybe grounded
