I instructed my father to purchase an Actiontec GT704-WG from Verizon. One of the main reasons I chose this router is because it supports port forwarding. I want to be able to Remote Admin into him PC to provide tech support for him. Verizon has put their own firmware on it which removed port forwarding among other feartues. Actiontec's website says not to update/replace the Verizon firmware with their's. Has anyone tried this to see if it will work or not? Does anyone know any other way to around this problem?
I'm pretty network literate but I flash my box with the latest and greatest firmware and It blew out my verizon setting and I really have no clue how to set it up so I can reconnect... The internet on the front of the gateway no longer comes on... I screwed my self why couldn't I have left things alone...
You should be fine using the new actiontec firmware just setup your dsl via advanced setup to "Obtain an IP Address through DHCP" and you should be good to go. I have done this with my modem.
actiontec firmware:
www.actiontec.com/support/broadband/gt704-wg_firm_updates.html
verizon firmware just in case:
www.verizon.net/actiontecupdate/
there you go!
I just flashed my verizon modem FT704-WG with the actiontec update upgrade301060gt704wg.img. I then selected "Obtain an IP Address through DHCP" and bam away we go... working better than verizons version.
For those with the Verizon version of the firmware wanting to setup a Slingbox... You can go to the Security tab and then go to the Games tab and setup the 5001 port from there. It works.

Same situation with the Verizon GT704WG - the lack of Port Forwarding is keeping me from setting up SlingBox for remote access.
Hope somebody has a solution.
Thanks folks for the responses. josh1865, are you saying that you are able to do port forwarding with your router? If so, are you using the Verizon firmware? My father's route is pulling a DHCP address and using Dynamic DNS. Guest, good to know the update worked for someone. I thought it would. Although, I found a posting from one person who said they did not get full functionality.
