An amp will cut out if the output protection circuit kicks in. This circuit compares output power against the preset level. Each channel has it's own, independent protector. There are calculations that can be done, but for a novice the rule of thumb is to "never use a speaker with a power rating less than the amp AND a lower impedance than stated". Typically using a 4 ohm load on a 8 ohm system is inviting disaster. Even if the system does not become a smoke generator, you might notice that though "louder", the sound quality is deteriorated. Many "audiophiles" often hook up some combinations of speakers to have "surround" without really understanding that the collective impedance actually changes (generally lowers).

My technics su-x501 amplifier cuts out after playing for 2-3 minutes, might be something getting hot and cutting out, any ideas

Hi Les, as a first step, I would disconnect the speaker cables in the Technics su-x501 and test if the same thing happens, if so, there could be a problem with the power supply or also with the speaker output
If it does not turn off, then I would start checking the speaker cables, along the way, in case there is any peeling, which could cause overheating
Once the cables were checked, I would connect the speakers one by one and test with each new reconnection until the source of the fault was detected
I hope you can solve the problem
Regards Franco Dosil

Su-2760 will not work. gets a flash of power, turn off

Sounds like the safety circuit is tripping cutting off the power. Most probable cause a short circuit on the main power amp board, causing an overload.

Technics su a900

I have the same TECHNICS SU A900 MKII as you are talking about and it always runs warm I think using 4R speakers instead of 8R speakers should solve the problem and actually I am thinking of switching to 4R as well.

Hi I just got a Technics SU V2 amp and can't get sound from the speakers. What size speakers would suit this amp? What is the correct method to connect the speaker leads to the back of this amp,...

Being a 500W amplifier, you need to connect speakers with 300W each. The correct method to connect speakers is red terminal of speaker should be connected to red terminal of amplifier & black to black. The left side to left side speaker & right to right speaker. There may be main & remote terminals. Main speakers are the speakers at local place of the amplifier & remote for remotely placed speakers. I do have Technics SU-V85A which is somewhat similar. Enjoy! A nice piece to listen.

Hi. Having problem getting sound from the little tweeters on my technics sb-1970 speakers. They are 3way linear phase speakers 90w each. I took the tweeter out and every wire is connected. Tried pushing...

If you went so far as looking at the wires on the tweeters you could have taken an ohmmeter to them to see if they're blown.

Is there a back story to this? What preceded the investigation?

Technics amplifier su-v98, cuts off at 22-24 desibls

The most common cause of this is defective coupling caps inside. These allow some DC voltage to pass through to the final amp stage. This DDC voltage is detected by the protection circuit and the unit shuts down. This unit will require service. Please note that this should be a simple and inexpensive repair. The cost should be less than $10 for parts.

Sound cuts when volume is turned up

check that power amplifier rating(how many watt)must be more than total speaker rating by 20% at least..
exampel:if speakers watts are 100 watt-amplifier watt must be 120 watt.
