I have a 312-8 wheel horse with a snow blower. When you go into the snow the snow blower quits turning along with the back tires.

277 cc is equal to between 7 and 8 horse power
357 cc is equal to about 13 horse power.
Brigs changed their rating several years ago when every thing went metric. I googled this information.

If it's the starter that makes a humming noise then you need to check the starter out. the gears could be stripped or even a tooth missing so it won't grab the fly wheel. Try pulling the start rope and see if that makes a difference. My Craftsman 8 horse has a recoil starter as well and I quite often use it as well. I don't always use the electric start.

If you turn the aluminum plate by hand with the tires rotate?? maybe the bearings are seized

Many snowblowers use pins (or bolts - see image below) that pass thru the shoulder of the rim of the tires thru a hole drilled thru the drive shaft. Removing both of the pins allows the tires to spin freely on the drive shaft and makes it much easier to push, pull and turn the snowblower. If they are not installed again, the machine will not "drive" and make clearing snow difficult to do. Installing only one will make the machine want to go in circles. Make sure you have these pins installed thru BOTH rim shoulders and drive shafts - locked in place. Other machines lock the tires in other ways - since it sounds like one side is working correctly - you should compare the two tires / rims and make them both look like the one that works properly. Drive belt or friction wheel is worn. Possibly both.

on my snow blower there was two positions to put the drive wheels back on, locked and unlocked. need to put the pin in the locked position thru the wheels and axles.

it sounds like you have a pretty small snow thrower, Here in northern michigan anything less than a 8 horse power will not work except on light fluffy snow. To answer your question, Yes that might help. any thing that reduces friction will make it work better. I really need a little more info before I can be of help on this. can you tell me what size (width) the blower path is, the horse power of the motor, the make of the device and also, is it one or two stage. when I hear back from you I'll try to be of more assistance.

just purchased 1995 says seller, serial # says 1990, 312h kohler wheelhorse 157 hours, royaly maintained, new condition runs great when it starts,turns over great, spins fires spins fires over and over then back fires thru carb, flames this no start, help going to snow tonight
